My mother has 2 x BT 4500 handsets with answer machine base station. One of the handsets has been a bit crackly for a while, now the other one seems to have failed. The BT4500 seems pretty obsolete but 4600 is available, so my question is, can a 4600 handset work with a 4500 base station?

Hi @nicknorman979, thanks for your post. You should be able to use a different model handset with the base as long as both are GAP compatible
Can I use a different type of BT cordless phone with my existing base? | BT Help
Both these are showing as GAP compatible.
BT Studio 4500 | BT Help
And the quick set up guide for the BT4600 | BT Help does say 'You can register up to 6 GAP compliant handsets to your BT4600 base'
The contact number for the product helpdesk contact numbers are listed on the product help pages if you need further help.
Cheers
John
