Re: BT 500 vs 900 vs EE

@TimCurtis

I probably missed this in the quagmire of threads but, if you're out of contract with BT, so on a rolling 30 day thing, I assume you can quite successfully use One Touch Switching from BT to EE online without having to talk to either part of the organisation and thus receive a EE router when you've been switched? Or have EE and BT cottoned on to that and basically stuff you and just migrate so that you end up continuing to use the most wonderful 7 year old (but perfectly good SH2) rather than have a nice EE WiFi6 capable router?

I'm not asking for me, I'm with PN using my own router, but it might be useful for those who want to switch.

By the way, when I used One Touch Switching, I made absolutely sure I did not have any verbal communication whatsoever with either BT or PN and everything went perfectly smoothly. Indeed I completely ignored any attempt by BT Retentions for example, to contact me by phone.

@Kimberlin

I think from previous post @TimCurtis  has already moved from BT to EE

Re: BT 500 vs 900 vs EE

If you are out out contract on BT and use the One Touch Switching you may find that your BTMail email account will not be carried over as a "Standard" email account and is instead "downgraded" to a "Basic" account where as if you contact BT/EE and tell them you are happy to be "migrated" to EE. This will ensure that your BTMail email account will remain as a "Standard" email account.

@ItsJustMewrote:

Has anyone moved from BT to the EE package. Customer services said its a no hassle move? And technically it's still BT but different router, a better one.

If you move from BT to EE and you already have a Smarthub 2 you will not get a new EE router as part of the the move. The Smarthub 2 will continue t work without you doing anything to it.

Re: BT 500 vs 900 vs EE

@pddco

The reason l downgraded was twofold. I wanted to see if there would be any significant loss in the level of Full Fibre service and more to the point, discover if the connectivity issues l have experienced  for 30 months, continued. I was amazed to find that there seemed to be no difference, between the FF150 and FF900 products. However, the “Stale PPP Session Faults” have continued and l can’t help wondering, if the Smart Hub, which has been replaced at least three times with refurbished product, is partly to blame. It is from monitoring this fault upon this forum, that l discovered that Full Fibre has superseded the older ONT and Smart Hub technology. Although it was originally suggested almost two years ago, it was only yesterday, that my ONT was finally upgraded, during the 17th on-site visit from an Openreach engineer. It is obviously too early to tell if this has cured the connectivity issues, but he did imply that this is to become standard practise.

@gg30340

Apologies, I'm not intentionally labouring the point, I was just trying to confirm whether or not if you use One Touch Switching from BT to EE when you're out of contract, would you get a new EE router or not? I'm already guessing you'll affirm that a current BT customer out of contract and properly switching to EE via OTS, wouldn't get a EE router? Is that the case?

Re: BT 500 vs 900 vs EE

@Kimberlin

Keep in mind you are never out of contract with BT. If you were you would have no broadband from BT.

You are either in a Fixed Term Contract, normally for two years for which you get a discount on the full price of the package you have chosen for the length of the Fixed Term Contract or when the Fixed Term Contract ends and assuming you do not renew into another Fixed Term Contract,  you are then on a 30 day rolling contract for which you lose the discount you had for being in a Fixed Term Contract and pay the full price for the package you are on.

Because of that you are obviously a BT customer in some form of contract.

While I can not say with 100% certainty but as far as I am aware and have seen on this forum that when you move to EE from BT and you have a BT Smarthub 2you do not get an EE hub as part of the move. This is regardless of how you initiate the move.

I will however ask a moderator to comment on this for clarity.

"Yes, the WiFi devices can certainly add up. Me and 'er indoors both have iPads, iPhones, we've two desktop PC's, 2 laptops, washing machine, dishwasher...."

Why on earth do you need your dishwasher and washing machine hooked up to WiFi? I find mine work perfectly well without any WiFi connection!

Re: BT 500 vs 900 vs EE

Normally BT  hound you for the return of the SH2 when you leave..expept when you join EE .

No you won't automatically get a EE wifi 6 router unless you order a 500mbps or above package.

If you ring and explain you only joined for the more up to date router then you might get one.

I got mine on E bay for £20 brand new still sealed.

Having experienced both the SH2 and the EE wifi 6 router my wifi increased instantly from 200mbps to often over 500mbps on my BT 500mbps package when I switched to the EE router

Like a faithful old hound the SH2 is well loved on this site but most if not all isp's give up on wifi 5 literally years ago.

Re: BT 500 vs 900 vs EE

@chrisjp

With regard to both my dishwasher (Bosch) and washing machine (Miele), they both receive over the air updates to their software via WiFi. It's how it is, not some weird up my own backside posh git 'Ooooh, look at him, dishwasher and washing machine on Wifi!' nutter. However, maybe I've spent too much money on white goods that get OTA updates via WiFi 🤣
