BT/EE Digital Voice Switchover to full fibre and a Windows7 desktop

My broadband and landline are due to be swtiched to digital voice/full fibre tomorrow. I use a Windows 7 desktop PC, connected to the internet by ethernet cable to the BT smart hub 2.0 updated a few years ago.  Will this PC still be able to access the internet after DV changeover.  I have read some information on the web, year of posting not known, which says that a W7 PC should still work but I'm uncertain.   There was also some information regarding the possibility of having to reduce the speed of the hub in to work in compatability with the speed of the PC. Unfortunately I'm not tech minded and tech savvy.  Can you advise please.

No idea why you are still using Windows 7, but that's a different matter.

There is no connection with your PC for Digital Voice so it matters not what operating system you have or even if you have a PC at all.

Internet connection won't change, it will be exactly as now.

I suspect the OP is asking if FTTP will in in effect be ‘too fast’ for the PC (although they do say ‘after DV changeover’ and not FTTP changeover  , but as they are apparently also getting FTTP and asking about speeds that may be the concern …the answer is the same though , Yes your PC will still work exactly as it does now after DV/FTTP is installed.

Re: BT/EE Digital Voice Switchover to full fibre and a Windows7 desktop

Your SH2 and the PC will " auto-negotiate" a speed on the ethernet cable.  The SH2 is capable of negotiating 10M, 100M, or 1000M bits per second, full or half-duplex (either send or receive).  The slowest your PC is likely to be is 100Mbps half-duplex, though it's far more likely to be full-duplex (simultaneous send and receive).

So there is pretty much no likely hood you won't be able to make full use of the speed your PC is capable of receiving, even if you can't fully use the speed the SH2 is capable of delivering.  And there is going to be little point in upgrading just the ethernet on the PC!

*Security Tips*

While for most of us with newer Windows PCs, MS Defender is all the Anti-Virus/Firewall we need, I believe it's no longer updated/supported on Win7, so probably need to use an AV/Firewall from a trusted third party.

I'd definitely log into your BT account on the web-portal and in the "Your Security" section, turn on "BT Web Protect".

I only learn by making mistakes and owning up to them - boy do I learn a lot!

Re: BT/EE Digital Voice Switchover to full fibre and a Windows7 desktop

Very grateful thanks for all of your replies. Yes, I was enquiring if the higher speed of FTTP would be too great for the slower connection speed of my old PC.  I do have AV protection from a trusted source, not through BT. It's a little 'old school' here corded landline phones and basic/feature phones for out of home use. I understand the comment made on TV Bill Bailey that mobile phones can upset brainwaves, I know, I've experienced it from both mobile and digital cordless handsets in the past.  The upgrade to FTTP and Digital Voice is due to be done today, the second attempt. It was due to be done last week but the installer arrived to discover the telephone pole  requires the use of a 'cherry picker' platform to access it, it's been installed too shallow to allow engineers to climb it. I'm aware that BT say it's a simple process but having read some comments regarding things that have not gone to plan for other users and their service has been affected for days, or weeks in some instances, I am a little concerned as 'simple processes' do not always go as expected at my property and due to family circumstances we don't want to be left without communication to the outside world.   Thank you again for your very informative comments. Hopefully the changeover will go to plan.

@Redlollipop  @Crimliar

You can manually download an anti-virus definitions update for Win 7 here:

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/defenderupdates?msockid=36fde35da0db68f92539f21ea13b69a5

and it should cope with the speeds without any real problems, but I'd have to agree with the others, Win 7 is getting a bit too long in the tooth.
