Before FTTC ( fibre to the cab ) was widespread, regular ‘broadband’ was exchange based ADSL/ADS2 , the ‘equipment’ instead of being sited in a street based cabinet like FTTC , the equipment is in the exchange , the technology also has a theoretical maximum of 24Mb ( rather than 80Mb with FTTC ) , but like FTTC , the speed is reduced the further away your address is from the equipment , most people are much closer to their cabinet than the exchange, so typical FTTC speeds may be 63Mb , typically ADSL is 17Mb but obviously it depends on how far your address is from the exchange.
In my case , I’m 5km from the exchange, (only 80m from the cabinet) on exchange based ADSL2 I got around 3.5Mb ,( I now get 80 Mb from FTTC ) , if I were in your situation and had to go back to ADSL and 3.5Mb …( it doesn’t sound much these days ) but I had standard def Netflix, browsing, email etc all we’re fine , but ( obviously ) I wouldn’t voluntarily go back to it, ( some do because it can be very cheap) but if it were the only solution in the short term I would take it
OK, so ( not a criticism ) asking for more details, changes the discussion…..if you had FTTC and wanted to upgrade to FTTP ( because it became available ) and ( unfortunately ) due to the distance your property is from the FTTP network ( presumably you are some distance from the FTTP equipment ) you can be asked to contribute…if you don’t want to or can’t pay the required excess construction costs ,( it’s not the entire cost ) normally returning to your previous (FTTC ) broadband isn’t an issue unless the FTTC cab is ‘waiting list ‘ , so no spare ports…in that case ADSL is the stop gap solution, if the area is now FTTP only ( because copper based products are no longer for sale ) then that’s vey bad luck…it’s unclear if you are simply waiting on a port in a cabinet, or the area is now not offering copper products ( which was the case with the example I mentioned, ) but in that example the ISP wasn’t mentioned, it wasn’t necessarily BT , it could have been any one of the many ISP’s that offer Openreach FTTP
thanks for taking the time to explain this so well!
I was simply told there was no longer any capacity at the cabinet end of.
So I don’t know if I can wait for a port - thanks for highlighting I will ask the question but I presume not as it hasn’t been mentioned to me as an option
