Broadband off

My broadband has gone off, telephone still working.  It is a network fault being fixed so I am working by connecting my desktop to my iPhone hotspot.

If this continued, is that when I get sent a thing to connect to a BT hotspot - my iPhone is not on a BT account?

Re: Broadband off

do you have the add on Halo? have you reported the fault or just checked using the fault checker?

Re: Broadband off

I've seen Halo but I don't know what it is. I've reported by text 61988 and been told by bot that there is a network fault, to be fixed probably within 2 days. I'm halfway through a 2 year contract with no OR in prospect, otherwise I would be off to another provider, after 50 years so far.

Re: Broadband off

My neighbour has just been round. His BB is off too and he is on TalkTalk.  I suppose they may share a provider or it is a power problem somewhere.

Re: Broadband off

Have you checked on Downdetector.co.uk as it may give regional info, not knowing where you live?

Re: Broadband off

Is your phone service still via the master socket ( so not DV and delivered via the router ) ? , if so , and a neighbour’s broadband  (using a different provider ) is also off , suggests it’s probably a problem with the FTTC cabinet, it’s not unusual for FTTC ‘cabinets’ to be wiped out by vehicles crashing into them , or possibly just a failure of something within the cabinet , obviously one type of repair is a major undertaking, the other relatively simple and quick.

As far as being sent a 4G mobile device to give some ‘broadband’ service during the repair time , that is possible but chances are you would need to have spoken to someone who could arrange that , rather than an automated response advising of a MSO ( major service outage ) ….depending on what the issue is , the resolution could be quick or could be not so quick , things like cabinets destroyed by RTC’s usually make local press , or social media for the area .

Unless you have access to a different network, then changing provider on Openreach is unlikely to achieve anything ( as far as this outage is concerned )

Re: Broadband off

I'm in Portobello, Edinburgh.  Yes - DD seemed to show a fair-sized peak - but much less than I've seen in the past so it must be a fairly local issue.  I'm still using my phone hot spot (5G but you don't get those speeds when sharing with a desktop via USB).  I have a Deco M5 system linked to an ECI modem (no router)  and that is working well distributing music round the house.

Two years ago there was a similar stop but that came back about 2 hours later  - this one is taking longer.

Re: Broadband off

@iniltous thanks, yes it is a FTTC cabinet I can see across the road and no one has been there today (it has regular visits).  It was tidied up 18 months ago which caused a breakdown due to excavations taking power and data cables in front.  I posted a few minutes ago about my Deco M5 mesh, no router.  The DSL light on the modem is off.    I'm currently linked via my Tescomobile iPhone - diversity helps.

BTW it is not the weather, we have had a very sunny, cold day, no precipitation.
