Broadband speed slows over years with BT

Paid for BT Fibre 2 in 2019 with a download speed range of 70 - 73 Mb and actual broadband speed test showed download speed of 48.1 Mbps

Paid for BT Fibre 2 in 2022 (higher cost following renewal) with a download speed range of 70-73 Mb and actual broadband speed test showed download speed of 28.0 Mbps. BT confirmed this via a recent phone call.

1) Appreciate BT advertised the highest speed possible and the max. one can get is still dependent on the area one is in. BT mentioned current infrastructure in the area as an example i.e., full fibre not yet installed, how far you are to the exchange, etc. However, I don't understand how you could go from having a download speed of 48.1 Mbps to 28.0 Mbps and expected to pay higher monthly fee by BT.  What's more frustrating is a neighbour, also with BT, ten doors down could get download speed of 137.34 Mbps. Something's not right!

Re: Broadband speed slows over years with BT

welcome to the BT community forum where customers help customers and only BT employees are the forum mods

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the stats from your router (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser) and if  HH5 then go to troubleshooting then helpdesk and if HH6/SH2 then advanced settings then technical log information .

Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal will not work if digital voice

enter your phone number and post results  remember to delete number  if digital voice then use address

Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

Re: Broadband speed slows over years with BT

Every line is unique so you cannot compare one with another. What your neighbour gets speed wise has nothing to do with what your line can support.

You should have been given a minimum guaranteed speed when you signed up for your present contract. What was that speed guarantee?

If your present speeds can not be improved because your line can not support higher speeds you should consider "downgrading" to Fibre 1 however mean time post the information requested above and hopefully there will be something that can be done to resolve the speed issue.
