Broadband speeds different on Win11 Laptops compared to Android Phones

-I had an upgrade to my broadband to 900/100Mbps yesterday.

-3 x Android Pixel phones (2x Pixel 6, 1x Pixel 😎 all achieve ~900/100Mbps no problem.

-3 x Windows 11 laptops (2 work laptops from different companies, 1 personal laptop) - all max out at ~320Mbps.

-I have tried the laptops on wired and wireless connections - all give the same result.

-The Ethernet is negotiating 1Gbps

-6GHz WIFI band / 2402 Mbps Tx/Rx link rate

-Autotuning: Normal, RSS: Enabled

-All tests completed multiple times over Ookla, BT, Fast.com, and Cloudflare all with almost exactly the same results

-Ping is ~12ms with 0% packet loss

Any ideas?

@frank_bough

It could be due to the write speeds of the drives on the laptops. Make sure you've optimised the drives using the Windows facility and then maybe try some write speed tests.

Are the drives SSDs or NVRAM based?

I assume that the upload speeds are OK though.

Re: Broadband speeds different on Win11 Laptops compared to Android Phones

All three laptops are getting EXACTLY the same download rate of 320Mbps - and they are all different laptops.  One is a new Microsoft Surface Laptop 6, one if a two year old Dell, adn the other is a six year old HP.

Yes, upload speeds are all fine at 100Mbps.

Have you asked on the MS forums, it certainly isn't a BT problem as your other devices receive full speed.

I think it is to do with how the BT hub is treating/negotiating rate with Windows 11 devices.  Unlikely that 3 laptops so different in age would have the same config problem resulting in exactly the same 320Mbps limit.

Nope.  I've got three desktops and a laptop, all Win 11 Pro.  No problems with speeds.

That doesn't help really.  That just shows there is a setting on my hub or my line different to yours that is causing the behaviour - I am aware lots of people do not have issues, and I would like to be in the same place.

How on earth do you think the BT hub can differentiate between W11 devices and other devices?

It ain't the hub causing the problem.

Re: Broadband speeds different on Win11 Laptops compared to Android Phones

No, it cannot but it would negotiate based on the capabilities of the device (Wi‑Fi, Ethernet adapter, supported PHY, RSS, rates, duplex, etc.), so not the operating system itself, but operating systems would share the same characteristics and the end result would be the same - all the Windows 11 machines would be treated the same.

If the problem was with the hub, this forum would be inundated with the same complaint but it isn't.
