Can I request an exchange reset?

Go to solution

I am fortunate to have a good VDSL connection and for many years I got an 80/20 Mbit/s connection speed. A couple of years ago a tree branch was blown low enough to hook my phone line up resulting in intermittent disconnects. I climbed the tree a few days later and chopped off the branch and the disconnects stopped. Unfortunately, the line was obviously damaged in some way and the connection would drop on windy days if the wind was blowing sufficiently to make the line swing side to side. I could look out the window, see the line swinging and know the connection was going to drop.

Over the next 18 months I made repeated calls to my broadband supplier and following one such call something was done at the exchange which resulted in my connection dropping to 80/14 Mbit/s. This did nothing to fix the disconnection problem. Eventually the supplier agreed to get the phone line from my house to the pole replaced on the basis that if the problem was not resolved then I would pay for the replacement. Following replacement of the phone line, the problem was solved but the connection speed remains 80/14 Mbit/s. My supplier will not address the issue because the connection meets their minimum speed. I expected the speed to increase over time but this has not happened and 6 months on it remains the same.

I realise that many people would be happy with a 80/14 Mbit/s connection and in all honesty it is still very useable but I remain 'irritated' that I am not getting 'the maximum that the line will support' as advertised.

How can I request (or force?) a reset so that the connection reverts to the 80/20 Mbit/s that I used to get?

you need to contact your own ISP to get any reset done on your internet connection

this is a forum for BT residential customers and there is no connection from here to openreach

As far as I'm aware, DLM doesn't act on the upload speed so a reset will not help.

Thanks, but my ISP will not do anything as the speed I am getting is above the minimum.

BT Residential nor BT Business ISP's can do anything for you either. Even changing ISP may not correct any problem you consider you have.
