I ask the question because I had it fitted yesterday. The engineer checked the speed whilst he was here on his phone - he showed 512Mb down speed, and 79Mb up. I also checked it on my PC which is wired to the hub. I used the BT Wholesale Speedtest. I got 495Mb down, and 80Mb up. I continued to check the average speed over the next hour, all with pretty much the same results.
Having lived with a 7Mb down and 0.8Mb up speed for more years than I can remember, I was over the moon. My internet experience was transformed, things that took ages to upload before, now uploaded instantly.
The engineer did say that the service would settle over the next few hours, and the speed may settle a little bit lower. So I kept my eye on it for the rest of the day every hour or so. And boy did it settle - but not by a little bit - by a very big bit!
The download speed settled to around 300Mb - either just above, or just a fraction lower. I was a bit disappointed to have lost such a big chunk of speed. An even bigger shock was the upload speed - that settled to around 11Mb. I wondered if it was just a busy time of the day, but at 1am it was still the same, and it is still like that this morning.
This drastic drop in speed coincidentally coincided with the arrival of a txt and email from BT saying that my new service was now fully up and running!
I logged into the hub and clicked on the broadband performance tab. It done it's thing and reported back that "My home connection could be improved" - "Let's see if a hub restart fixes things". So I let it do a restart of the hub, it made no difference. So it would appear that the check did pick up something was not right.
So I am asking the community, especially those that have the same BT Full Fibre 500 package, what is your average up and down speeds? Especially the upload speed, is yours normally this low - 11Mb?
Thank you.
Average speed check within an hour of install.
And after the system settled.

See bottom right of the result and try again.
We got the 500 package last Friday & our speeds, on the tester, have been anywhere from 250 to 512 down & 15 to 80 up, but I'd say that an overall average speed would be around 425 down & 60 up.
We upgrade to 900 this coming Monday.
To me the speed tester isn't too important, when I watch the TV it doesn't play things 10 times faster that it did when we were on FTTC.
The advantage of FTTP to me is the ability to run 70 Alexa devices with instant responses & 17 CCTV cameras with no buffering.
Thanks for the suggestion. My pc meets the requirements, and obviously the test was working fine earlier. I would however like to do the additional diagnostic checks, but at the moment I am struggling to find my service ID number (BBEU). A google search led me to a BT page saying that the service ID would be in the account confirmation email they sent me. The email did not include that ID number. (It did however tell me my guaranteed download speed would be 425Mb) It also said i could find the ID by logging into My Bt, it should be displayed under the services tab. But unfortunately this morning I am unable to log into My Bt, the page keeps timing out.
I shall try to log in again later and see if i can find the BBEU number i need to run the additional tests. Thanks again.
Thanks caravanj, your average figures match what the engineer said I should expect once things had settled.
The main reason i went for the 500 package is because the grandchildren tend to download a lot of xbox games, which can be many tens of gigabytes in size. I understand that the max speed one can expect to get from the xbox servers is 300Mb, and that is on a good day. Have not checked it yet, but with my download speed being very near to that mark i could well find myself back in the position of not having any spare capacity to watch tv or use the pc and phones. Hence why I am keeping my eye on the speed. i also have the same grandchildren uploading videos from time to time. In the past we have always had to do such things overnight, and with a lot of the games it would take two or more nights to complete. Was hoping to get away from all of that. My old landline speed was only about 7Mb on average! (The joys of living out in the countryside).
But thank you for your input, does seem to show do have an issue at the moment. Once I can find my service ID number i will run the diagnostic check on the BT speed check site. Having said that, before replying here i re-run the homehub diagnostic check, it still thinks there is an issue. I will see how it is over the weekend, if it does not improve i will have to give them a ring.
Mine has been bang on 490's all through my contract, nudging 70 up. I am hard wired though, cant remember if its direct to the router or the switch.
Never bothered with a wifi test.
As you don't seem to want to click on the speed test for the 500/1000 product (as per my earlier post) perhaps try fast.com and post that result.
@400 - thanks for the input. My down speed is now back up and steady at around 480Mb - thankfully. Sadly the upload is now right down to 9Mb. Hopefully it is still sorting itself out and that will correct itself over the next day or so.
Your input gives me hope!
Hi pinpincp,
it's not that I have not tried clicking on the 500/1000 link, I just cannot find the service ID number I need to proceed with that test. According to BT's own website it's can be found by clicking the 'service' tab at the top of the page in My Bt. Have searched everywhere, but that info seems to be well out of date. It also said I would find the service ID number in the email confirmation of order - nope, also not true. Do you know where it is hidden? 😐
But since then, the download speed is back up and seemingly steady at around 480Mb, sadly the upload speed is now down at 9Mb according the BT speed test.
I have tried the Fast.com test, that's given me some interesting results over the last 24 hours, varying from 196Mb down, with 0 Mb upload. The latest one i just done is also interesting - the download speed is not far off of what the BT test says, but it is showing me now to have a very impressive 860 Mb upload speed. Not sure I believe that!
I will let it settle for a day or two, and if things don't settle to somewhere near my expected speeds i will have to phone customer services to get the illusive service ID number so i can use the 500/1000 diagnostics.
Thanks again for your input.
I've just done a WiFi speed test & it's 40 down & 38 up which I reckon is good since there are another 62 WiFi devices connected.
