How to relocate my router? Open Reach?

Go to solution

I'm considering moving my router to a more convenient location in my home.
This is due to having a number of items which require access to my router and its becoming very cluttered.

Who do i contact to move my open reach box and how?
Also would anyone be able to give me approximates  of how much it costs to move the box within the house? I want to move it from the living room to a storage area either at the bottom of my stairs or at the top of the stairs?

@MichaelOzz  When you state "Openreach box" I assume you mean the Optical Network Terminal if you are on Fibre to the Premises? Is there a reason why you cannot purchase say a length of flat ethernet cable and run that from the ONT where it is currently sited to where you wish to relocate your router? I assume that it is the router you want to re-site? Self help would quite possibly save you a lot of expense.

I'm assuming that your router is currently sited next to the ONT?

Internal ONT shift £109.67 excluding VAT , this is what Openreach charge the ISP , what the ISP charges you (assuming you can get an order raised in the first place ) will probably be more once they add in their time and trouble to arrange it on your behalf , this charge would appear on your regular ISP bill not billed separately from Openreach, you don’t arrange anything directly with Openreach, you contact your ISP , they arrange it with OR .

As stated this is assuming the box in question is the ONT , and that the new location is suitable,  so it can be safely accessed , isn’t totally impractical etc, there are limits even if you are paying handsomely for the service.

TBH, I think you would be better advised to run your own Ethernet cable from the ONT location to the ‘new’ router location yourself , or employ a tradesperson to do this for you if your DIY skills are not sufficient.

Just to round out the other comments here, theoretically you can have up to 100m of ethernet cable between the ONT and the router.  80-85m is more realistic in practice.  You want Cat 5e or Cat 6.  Anything higher is a waste of money.  Avoid anything labelled CCA (Copper Clad Aluminium).  It’s rubbish.  You want pure copper.  Flat cable also varies a lot in quality.  Round cable is better.
