Re: I have moved to 900MB but still suck with the speed around 500MB download

Thanks for that. The whys and wherefores are not really relevant to anyone but technos tbh.  Yes Wi-Fi speed is very important indeed. Who wants copper wire speed? Answer no one. Who wants gigabit speed? Answer everyone. Who plugs there phones tablets or even computers into the hub? Answer very few. So by advertising a speed of 900 mbps BT are misleading just about everyone. Do EE offer a router that can provide, over WiFi, gigabit speed? If so then BT need to provide their customers with them. Advertising Standards need to look into this. BT are charging a lot of extra money for 900 speed which doesn’t actually work!

Re: I have moved to 900MB but still suck with the speed around 500MB download

The advertising states in the small print that it is for the speed to your router. For some people with wiring around their houses this will be fine.

You can replace the SmartHub 2 with a router / mesh system with faster WiFi if it is not fast enough for you.

BT will not update their consumer routers because they want you to move to EE.

New EE routers are WiFi 6 and a WiFi 7 router is coming later in the year.

“Small print” says it all. Someone mentioned disingenuous. That’s exactly what BT are.

There is no ISP who guarantees wireless speeds, its impossible to to the long list of thing that can affect it. Let me know when you find an ISP that does and I'll donate £100 to the charity of your choice.

Re: I have moved to 900MB but still suck with the speed around 500MB download

What type of platform are you measuring your speed, a pc, laptop, or phone?  I have upgraded to 900, but all online speed checkers, including BTs show a download speed of less than 40.  When I use my iPhone and use the BT App to measure the speed, it shows just over the 100 guaranteed minimum, but it falls when I set the iPhone to use my home internet.

I have tried to download the BT App on to my old and new laptops from the Google Play Store, but Google sends me round in circles.

@JTS1

Post your router stats. You wouldn't be the first person set up on the wrong profile.

Don’t waste your time on this. The gigabit download speed doesn’t really exist, it is just theoretical. I moved to it and ended up in exactly your position viz absolutely no increase in speed. I went back to 500 and I’m happy. Move on, cross the bridge 😂

"Who plugs there phones tablets or even computers into the hub?"

I don't of course plug my mobile phone and tablet into my SH2. But I certainly do this with my computers, since that are not likely to be moved while I'm using them and I get much better speeds with an ethernet connection. I suspect I'm not alone in this.

Thanks for your reply, but I don't understand what you mean about being "set up on the wrong profile".

Do you mean set up on the wrong profile 'by BT'?

The 100 stats that I accumulated were from various Speed Checkers, Sky, Virgin, Ookla, Which and BT.  All of these were equally similar.

However, after posting my first message, I discovered something that appears to have resolved my problem with BT.  When I looked again at the screen in very small print, there was a location shown that showed the name of a nearby town (approximately 1 mile from where I live), so I clicked on it and it changed to area closer to my location.

On running the BT Speed Checker again, more realistic figures appeared showing download speeds between 500-600 Mbs.  This does not however explain why all of the other speed checkers, which are claiming to be accurate, are still recording speeds well below 40Mbs.

Here is a test that I have just run:
