Hi, my external ip address is constantly changing, sometimes every minute or so, the thing is it’s swapping between the two same addresses each time. Sometimes it’s 10 minutes or so. I know it’s allocated by dhcp so I understand that it will change every now and then but every few minutes seems weird to me. I just noticed this on a network monitoring tool I’m running for the very reason that I suspected I was having frequent losses of service. I’m on Full Fibre 900. Any ideas would be appreciated.
cheers Steve

Hi @steveycarr
Welcome to the BT Community.
Do you currently have a VPN installed on your devices that you're using?
Chris
Hi Chris, thanks for your reply, sometimes I do use my VPN but I know it’s not that because the VPN tells you what IP address you are using. However after a bit of research I’ve discovered the IP addresses it’s swapping to is opendns. So I’m running piHole and piAlert on a Linux machine on my Network, piHole blocking unsavoury ads etc and piAlert monitoring my network for all kinds of activities. PiHole is acting as my DNS server. Bottom line is I don’t think it’s physically swapping my ip address I think it is just misreporting this when piHole makes a DNS request to an upstream DNS server which I set as 8.8.8.8 but for some reason it seems to be using Cisco’s openDNS server instead hence the IP address of 222.222.xxx.xxx. I’ve not been able to find out how that happens but for now I’ve stopped running PiHole and PiAlert for now. Thanks again for your reply.
