Is my download speed ok for Full Fibre 900 service?

Hello all

I'm currently on Full Fibre 900 service (with a Smart Hub 2). I'm curious as to whether my speeds are normal on WIFI.

If I put my phone right next to the router and speed test it, the most I can ever get is about 250mb download. If I move to the back of the house, I'm only getting around 80mb, sometimes down to 30mb.

I would have thought that being sat right next to the router I should be far closer to 900mb than that? 

The main issue is that I work from home at the back of the house, so I really need at least 500mb back there, not 30-80mb. Seems crazy paying for 900mb to only get 80mb. 

Does this seem normal? And if not, is there anything I can do to improve it? I've tried rebooting and all sorts. Is there any settings on the router that I can change to improve this?

I doubt you'll ever get 900mb over wifi due to the many issues that can effect it.What device are you using for your wifi what is its wifi chip rated at, etc etc?

Best connection is always ethernet cabled.

Trouble with the SH2 is that you never know really whether you're on the 2.4 or 5GHz band as they can't be split and the speed difference between those bands is significant. Also it's only wifi 5 and that also makes a difference.

If you've wifi 6 or 7 devices and want great speeds then invest in a new router - my choice being Asus but Netgear , TP-Link etc are reputable brands.

You could get something like an Asus RT-AX82U for sub £50 on ebay or vinted as an example.

see if  you can get them to give you thr new hub wifi 6 eambled or just buy an EE router that thats has wifi connect drectly to the to test the speed use speedtest.net
