Loss of download speed.

Hello,

I am at a loss, as to why this has happened. I have diagnosed and checked hardware, though I cannot find any faults.

Maybe there is something, I have missed and you will be able to point me in correct direction?

Issue I am having is, I used to have a 75Mbps downstream and 19Mbps upstream. I was investigating an issue with an online game and noticed that now, the speeds are 53Mbps downstream and 20Mbps upstream.

Connection to hub is great. I do not know when this drop has occurred exactly. (I was checking speeds when BT contract was due for renewal 11th July 2024) Connection has been constant 70+Mbps downstream and 17+Mbps upstream for many years, with a few minor issues.

The only change has been a processor upgrade, 6 cores / 12 threads to 8 cores / 16 threads. Nothing else has changed hardware side. Software side, nothing new installed and as far as I am aware just a Microsoft Windows 10 security update.

Your hub is apparently still giving you almost 80Mbps download speed, so the drop to 53Mbps must be occuring within your local systems. Not sure what you mean with "connection to the hub is great". Is the 54Mbps download measured for a WiFi connection or an ethernet cable one?

Hello Chris,

Connection from Cabinet to Hub is great.

All connections are via Cat6e cabling.

I am at a loss, as to where/why there is a 20Mbps has disappeared too.

I have checked a few times now. I am asking here, before I strip out wiring and install new.

Connections are -

Smart Hub 2 to 8 port powered unmanaged hub to RJ45 Cat6e wall socket via Cat6e Shielded cable run ( max 5m) to RJ45 Wall socket to 8 port powered unmanaged hub to Intel PRO/1000 PT PCIE card. (Hubs are D-Link DGS-108GL Jan 2022)

It is probably something simple, that I have overlooked.

Have you tried a speed test with nothing connected to the Smarthub ie all wired connections removed.

If the reading is OK then try plugging in each connection one at a time and testing one at a time until you find where the loss is occurring.

I do not have a device to connect to the Smart Hub via a wireless connection, to test speed.

I have tried the following-

Back of Smart Hub 2, has ports 1, 2, and 3 then a WAN port.

1 switch either end then ports 1,2, and 3.

No switches, then ports 1,2, and 3.

No switches, different port on network card, then ports 1,2, and 3.

The only test i am not able to complete today 03/08/24 is long 30m cable (On order) direct from Smart Hub 2 to network card in computer. (If I could move computer downstairs, I would have done this.)

The BT speed test, reports same results as image posted plus/minus 1%. Basically 53Mbps downstream and 20Mbps upstream. 

I will update, when longer cable arrives and have tested that.

EDIT 03/08/2024 18:40 BST (6.40pm)

Update on wireless test at 5Ghz connection via BT speed test. 72Mbps Downstream and 13Mbps Upstream.

Also changed from Intel NIC to Onboard Realtek NIC same 53Mbps Downstream and 20Mbps Upstream.

All down to 30m Cable arriving 04/08/2024. Will the issue be Smart Hub 2 ports or Cat6 cabling between downstairs and upstairs?

I think I may have not been clear in what I posted. I was not meaning to test the wireless connection although that would do no harm to know what it is.

I was meaning to remove everything  connected to the hub and then only connect one device such as a laptop via a good Ethernet cable and then run a speed test to see what you get.

Hello Distinguished Sage,

I did understand. The issue for myself, is moving a system downstairs to set up and test direct patch lead to BT Smart Hub 2. (Not impossible, just a real world issue, where a £15 cable is more convenient.)

I do not have a laptop to hand and the laptop that did the wireless test, does not have a RJ45 port.

I have checked software and see no restrictions. Proxy is set to none, which sometimes is set by an update. I did ipconfig and netsh commands. Checked BT Smart Hub, just in case there had been an update that allowed you to set bandwidth limits on Ethernet connections.

I have never come across a drop in speed, that was not either an ISP or software issue. Hardware tends to fail and no longer work.

For me, it will be interesting to find out. Will be the the BT Smart Hub 2 or internal wiring? The other thought I have is, if neither the BT Smart Hub 2 or the internal wiring is at fault. Better go and download Windows 10 and 11 iso's and a fresh install on different NVME SSD.

Have you tried a full reset of the SH2? Before doing so save any non standard settings as these will be lost when doing a full reset. I presume you have tried restarting the SH2 already - of not I would try that first.

Update Sunday 4th August 2024

New 30m cable arrived and have finished testing.

I am so confused, downstream went up to 65Mbps. Tested before (Internal cabling) and after with new 30m cable. If the speed decrease was internal cabling, then there would be a difference in speed.

Warmer day here, than past few days. Possible that there is a bad connection(solder joint) in BT Smart Hub 2?

Going to do another reset and see what happens. Also dug out old Bt Openreach Huawei Echolife Hg612, not sure how to directly use without a BT Hub or another router. (Will have a browse and see.)

That is all, I have for now. I will update after I have reset and tested new cable versus internal cabling.
