My father is the only person in the street who cannot order FTTP

I wonder could anyone give me some advise please.  There is currently no capacity for me to be able to order FTTP to my father's house. He owns a business opposite the house which has FTTP and everyone else on the street has FTTP (I checked with the neighbours).

My Father  lives at number 42 and the business address is also 42 despite them being on opposite sides of the road.

My Supplier has escalated the issue to Openreach but this is dragging on with updates advising that there is no capacity and that Openreach are looking to see if the house can be routed off a different CBT and that potentially he may have to wait until someone moves house and space opens up.

The supplier suspect that due to the way the business and my father's house share the same house number (despite being on opposite sides of the street) that this may be an error on the part of the FTTP infrastructure and they may have missed the address. Can anyone suggest how we can move this forward please.

This does happen. If there are no FTTP ports left, then you won't be able to order FTTP, regardless of whether a business or a private customer. It's served on a first come first served basis, I'm afraid.

It may, however, be that a port is there but that's isn't connected. The best way to do is to inspect the pole with ports to see if there are any spare ones left. 

If not, Openreach  would increase capacity but only when there are resources/time, and if the DSL switch off is planned for your area etc.

enter you father's address and see what is available.  if business and home have same address and already have FTTP that definitely will be a problem  you need to take it up with your supplier as there is nothing this BT Retail forum can do to help you   there is no contact here to openreach anymore than there is from your own supplier

Openreach dimension the PON area on a basis of 1 connection per dwelling, so even if both buildings  inexplicably have the same address , there should still be capacity for both.


It’s much more likely it’s the address error that’s stopping an order , you should never  have 2 buildings called No.42 on the same street , the error all the more obvious if they are on different sides of the same street.

Its difficult to see how you can resolve this without first getting the addresses sorted out to match the Royal Mail entry, that’s if the Royal Mail record is correct .

and that  is already served , trying to get a second ‘line’ may well show this , 

ONT exists with active service. No spare ports are available. Network is at capacity so a new ONT cannot be ordered.

If you check on a UPRN checker , obviously these two buildings even if both known as No.42 should have different Unique Property References Numbers , you could see if an order can be raised against the UPRN , rather than the house number.

You  keep referring to the supplier, so it’s reasonable to assume it’s not BT that are the preferred supplier , so your problem is not anything to do with BT ( so no ‘official’ help is available from BT  ) you really need your preferred supplier to do more than they apparently are doing .

@Edinburgh-wg  Which DSL switch off are you referring to? DSL is here for many years to come. There is no planned switch off.

Property naming/numbering is controlled by your local council, so I'd start with what their records show. If they also have two number 42s then one can be renamed. Although that raises another question as to how the business rates & council tax are being administered if the two properties share an identity.

That would then migrate through to the RM postcode database at which point, you could request an ORDI update of Openreach's database through your preferred supplier. Then, assuming the address clash is the issue, you should finally be able to order.
