I’m getting FTTP and engineer had found no existing conduit at property so needed team to come and dig and lay new cable. They’ve been today and aside from short stretch of conduit from BT unit in pavement to our lawn, rest of cable was laid directly into a shallow trench in lawn, without any trunking or conduit. I queried it and engineer said that’s how they do it now. Is this normal? Seems a great way to cut costs but also risks damage to cable in future.

No, it is not normal. The cable should have been provided in a duct. Complain and get them back, they were just cutting corners.
