New Router Drops Out Every night around the same time

I have had BT Broadband for the last 6 years with no issues. Last month I was sent a new router as part of the move towards telephone connection via the router. As an aside my phone is not compatible with the new system.

This new router drops out 3 or 4 times in the evening around the same time 18.30-19.30. Never happened with the old router which I sadly had to send back.

I went through the usual troubleshooting and diagnostics but no problems found. Is it a faulty router or is something else going on?

If it isn't a resolvable situation will probably change to another supplier, I'm paying a lot of money for an annoying service disruption.

My usual suggestion is to just pick up a replacement router from Facebook Marketpace or similar.  Should only cost a few pounds & much less painful than trying to negotiate BT "support". If it cures the problem, you have your answer & if not, you've ruled it out.

Curious about the incompatible phone? Unless it's something that belongs in a museum it should  work.

Service interruption regularly at same time of day ( or night ) can be REIN / SHINE issues ( search these terms if interested ) but basically ‘faulty’ electrical items switching off or on , can interfere with ADSL /VDSL equipment, causing it to lose sync , and it has to re sync once the disturbance has ended , hence the annoying break in service, a typical problem can be something like a central heating / hot water system switching off or on at the same time every day ….obviously it’s odd ( if this is the problem ) that your previous router wasn’t affected, and the faulty electrical item may appear to be working fine , it’s just creating electrical ‘interference’ .

You could be unlucky in that the new router supplied is faulty , ( but that woukd be odd that it fails at the same time every day ) so it’s unfortunate you don’t have a ready replacement to try , as stated , you could buy another one to try ( and keep as a spare )  , or call BT and request a replacement, but obviously if it’s not the router then you would be no further forward, as you would return the existing one .


FYI , there isn’t really any scheduled maintenance or uploads that Openreach or BT do in the background that would cause a regular interruption like this .

Thanks, I've switched everything off apart from my TV and router to check if anything in my house is causing the issue. It dropped out around the same time. I don't believe that anything in my house is causing the issue. perhaps time to try another router.

Perhaps your remember this story , the device causing the REIN/SHINE   problem doesn’t necessarily have to be within the property having the issues with broadband, but changing the router is a worthwhile step.

I had an issue for over 15 years which repeated engineer visits never fixed - the router would drop out every time there was a temperature change/sun shone/went in, particularly going from day into evening.

Then just over a year ago they finally replaced our phone pole in preparation for FTTP… and coincidentally the fault immediately disappeared and my FTTC connection became rock solid.

So the problem was clearly with the pole cable (between the pavement pit and the DP at the top of the pole) and the engineers had been (deliberately?) avoiding fixing it for 15 years due to the state/access difficulties with the old pole.

Obviously I am FTTP now so am immune from the issues with old copper cables. But just to warn that getting this sort of problem diagnosed and fixed can be next to impossible. Probably better to just look forward to a FTTP connection when it comes to you.
