Openreach ONT and connecting Router

Go to solution

Just moved in to new house and found this Openreach ONT in the downstairs cupboard with an adjacent dual outlet.

ONTONTCombination plateCombination plateIf I plug the WiFi router directly in to the ONT green socket everything is good, but if I plug it in to the adjacent RJ45 outlet then No Good. If I plug the router in to the RJ45 socket of the 4 gang combination plate in the middle of the lounge then No Good.

If I want to position my router behind our T.V. by connecting to the RJ45 socket module on the combination plate in the lounge, should I be connecting a patch lead from the ONT green socket to the adjacent RJ45 socket in the cupboard? In other words is that how I distribute the LAN out of the ONT?

Think of the connection from the ONT to the Smarthub as having to be just one continuous Ethernet cable albeit you are using multiple cables and Ethernet sockets.

Assuming the Ethernet sockets are connected as you suspect you will need to connect the ONT to one of the Ethernet sockets in the cupboard then connect the corresponding Ethernet socket in your lounge to your Smarthub's WAN (No.4) socket.

You should then be able to connect to the Smarthub using any of the three remaining Ethernet LAN sockets.

As gg30340 says, but I would also add that putting the router behind the TV is a real Wi-Fi killer.  TVs are not transparent to wireless signals!
