Re: Openreach bypassed my street for FTTP and ignore all attempts at dialogue

You're a bit late.

This thread is two years old.

Re: Openreach bypassed my street for FTTP and ignore all attempts at dialogue

It never ceases to amaze me how this forum is used as a rant by people for failures and problems in telephony infrastructure. Some clearly don’t understand that BT and Openreach are separate services and essentially complaining here that there’s no infrastructure in place in their own street goes literally no where. Must be great to get it off one’s chest though and of course great for the forum help members who love to type paragraphs of information explaining overhead cables and ductwork and so forth. Keeps people busy I guess.

@dabmonger

You don’t seem to appreciate that Openreach are a business and can spend their money , time and effort where they see fit , if your area is a strong commercial proposition then you don’t even need Openreach , do you also bare a grudge against the Alt Nets that are not servicing your cul-de-sac , there are many Alternative Networks, however they too will make a cost / benefit analysis…

in some respects your area being deferred (even when surrounding areas are being built ) is partially because any new infrastructure Openreach install is immediately available to competitors, so you could  have a situation where your cul-de-sac has multiple thousands of ££’s spent by OR on new ducts , jointboxes etc , and OR get few takers because an Alt Net immediately puts in their own cables etc in this new ducted infrastructure, and sign up more customers than Openreach based ISP’s do , and the final insult, they pay a pittance to rent space in that very expensive new ducted infrastructure….if it were your business and your money what would you do ?

A bit late?!

The exact same problem is still ongoing, so it doesn't matter if it's 2 weeks, 2 months, 2 years ... or even 2 decades.

This issue just happened to me, and I couldn't have predicted it 2 years in advance.

This is the appropriate thread.

Well, I'm not that "sone people".

I mentioned the UK government, and compared it to the provision of utility infrastructure in the past century.

The idea of my comment is to get it out there in the ether, and it found you no problem.

I myself don't care anything about the relationship between Openreach and BT, that's irrelevant to my point.

And what if you live in a town and the Civils just pass over your street for an FTTP upgrade?

Look at my other replies.

You're totally missing the point.

You can't see the wood for the trees.

"You don’t seem to appreciate that Openreach are a business and can spend their money , time and effort where they see fit"

I absolutely appreciate it, but this wasn't the type of situation at play when they installed utilities like electricity. Wake up. This is UK government related.

"Alt Nets" aren't coming anywhere near a town of 10,000 people where I live, which makes the Openreach situation all the worse.

"in some respects your area being deferred"

It will be far less efficient overall to bring Civil crews back to do these jobs later than doing it when all the equipment and crews are metres away today.

You really need to think about two things:

1. Did the UK government have to set it up this way

2. Would you be agreeing with yourself if you were left with FTTC and paying far too much for it?

🤔

Re: Openreach bypassed my street for FTTP and ignore all attempts at dialogue

"...in some respects your area being deferred (even when surrounding areas are being built ) is partially because any new infrastructure Openreach install is immediately available to competitors..."

I wonder if this works the other way around - so that Openreach can immediately use infrastructure installed by AltNets? It surely should do, but I somehow doubt it.
I have an interest in this because the Fibrus AltNet has recently installed FTTP infrastructure in my area, but Openreach currently has no plans to provide FTTP service in this area.
I've been offered FTTP by Fibrus but unfortunately I had just renewed a 2 yr BT contract and they wanted more than £600 to cancel it. Fibrus was offering some buy-out funding but nothing like £600.
Given Fibrus's infrastructure, it presumably wouldn't cost much for Openreach to provide FTTP using it, but I see no signs of them doing this.

My apologies @dabmonger

No offense intended, it's just that threads that old often go unanswered when somebody tries to resurrect them.  A new thread is often a better option.  Clearly not a problem in this case, however.

No offense taken @WSH.

I'm actually glad that this thread got resurrected, even if people have differing views.

I'm actually with EE (I understand fully the BT/EE relationship!), but when I saw the title of this thread, I just had to post 🙂
