Openreach bypassed my street for FTTP and ignore all attempts at dialogue

PIA (physical infrastructure access) is a requirement on Openreach but no one else , if it were a commercial money maker then everyone that has infrastructure would offer wholesale access to it , but they don’t , the reason is pretty obvious, if you provide infrastructure possibly at as much as £100/metre being required to offer to others at 0.5p per metre is the economics of the madhouse, OR offer it because they have no choice they are forced to do it , the price set by Ofcom ,  but they are not forced to provide new infrastructure either , so why give the competition a huge leg up in  areas where there is no compulsion  when they have a huge advantage in other areas where infrastructure exists , basically it doesn’t work the other way around, Virgin /Nexfibre and the other Alt Nets don’t offer PIA because it’s not forced upon them, so your Alt Net will never offer competitors access to physical infrastructure on the same terms as Openreach are required to offer it to others

@licquorice As I've already said, I'm not even with BT, and I'm putting this out for information purposes.

I've never blamed BT or even Openreach - read my messages properly.

And what would you do if you became a FTTP orphan? You would just accept it happily, and not be "whinging"?

Openreach, or someone else, will have to come back one day, and it'll cost far more than doing it now (and I'm not just talking about inflation).

Leaving areas orphaned is just going to cost more in the long run, and someone is going to have to pay for that in order to completely switch copper off.

PIA applies to any Openreach netwpork anywhere. If Alt-Net don't wish to use it in any area that's up to them.

What makes you think copper is going to be completely switched off? It is only the PTSN (phone service) that is being replaced due to cost and shortive of parts to keep it going. Interrnet sevices over copper will continue foe many years.

Which to me just demonstrates what a pig's breakfast the OFCOM rules are. The AltNets can use Openreach infrastructure without charge, but Openreach cannot use the AltNet's infrastructure, even if they were to pay for it.

TBH , there is a charge if Alt Nets use PIA , but it’s a peppercorn rent , a few pennies per metre per year , amazingly even with pittance  they pay , Alt Nets still have the audacity to complain that PIA charges are too much, even the dubious claim that much of BT/Openreach network was built when a nationalised industry so ‘taxpayers’ paid for it , ignores the fact it sold off not given away , and that was 1984 , more than 40 years ago , yet duct installed yesterday is treated the same as duct installed 60 years ago .

@dabmonger There is a Universal Service Obligation for broadband, in the same way that there is/was for gas and electricity. It's 10Mbps. I think there's some pressure to increase that to 30Mbps.

No one is going to have to come back in the future to supply you with FTTP. You'll get it when the cost of providing it to you provides a reasonable return on whatever investment is required.

That might all sound a bit harsh, but it is what it is. The telecoms companies operating in the UK are privately, not publicly owned.

Is that government failure? Depends on your view point I guess. The government has put a regulator in place to oversee telecoms (Ofcom) who can, and do, consult on the USO. i.e. what's the bare minimum you can expect. But I think we're a long way off from a universal obligation for telecoms providers to supply FTTP to anyone that wants it. I suspect there's little to compel government to do much about it ... as over 90% of the UK now has gigabit-capable access already.

There's a USO (of sorts) for water supply. 0.7 Bar of pressure. Try living with that ....... as someone with first hand experience I can tell you it's pretty grim !
