Question about ONT location

Hi, We're going to be switching to full fibre in the next weeks and am just wandering about where the ONT may be located.

Right now we have the BT master socket in the cupboard under the stairs and would prefer the ONT and everything to be in the same place but will need to fit a power socket in there as currently we don't actually have any around the front of the house (Should be easy enough to have done as our fuse box is also in there).

Currently the phone cable comes from the pole to the top of our house and runs down the side of the wall to a grey box. From there a cable runs runs along the side of the house, around the corner to the front and enters through the wall into the cupboard under the stairs where our master socket is.

I'll add this image below. The red line is the cable coming from the pole and the green is where it runs from the grey box around the side to the front where it enters.

Do you see any problem with the fibre cable running the same route with the ONT been placed where our master socket currently is as that's where we would prefer it to be?

And here's the cable running from the grey box around the corner.

Re: Question about ONT location

No one can say for certain but what you want doesn’t seem unreasonable, especially the new external cable following the route of the existing cable , however a new ‘hole’ is probably needed from the cupboard under the stairs through the outside wall, can the tech get into the cupboard to do this ? and as you know power will be needed (even if it’s an extension lead ) , and  unless you have a long Ethernet cable to locate the router in a different location to the ONT , having the router placed near the ONT (so 2 power outlets) inside the cupboard won’t be ideal for WiFi coverage.

Re: Question about ONT location

Getting in there isn't too tricky. Where the cable comes in now is right at the back corner which is a bit cramped (And next to the gas meter) but if there willing to run the cable & drill a hole through another meter or so which is about where a power socket would be fitted then there's a good amount of space.

The existing cable & master socket isn't too old as we had issues with the phone line about 10-11 years ago and all new cabling and a new master socket (As we didn't have one before) was fitted. The BT engineer that ran that cable didn't have any trouble working in there when he did that.

My dad's an electrician and he's already had a look and said it's easy enough to fit a double socket in the cupboard.

I do currently have the router upstairs as I prefer my computers to be wired but it's no problem for me to run some cable from the ONT up to where i'd like the router, I actually already got some CAT6 LAN cable & a pack of RJ45 connectors as well as a cable tester. I'd also then need to run a phone cable from the router back downstairs as while we do already have wireless BT phones we'd prefer the main one to remain in the living room as it has an answer phone on the base station. But again doing that isn't a problem and I have some phone cable to do that.

Re: Question about ONT location

Just so you're aware, that "long ethernet cable" can be anything up to 100m long.

Re: Question about ONT location

Why don't you ask BT for a D V adapter which you could plug into a power socket downstairs  and connect your corded phone to adapter. Adapter pairs with the DECT hub.
