I'm thinking about upgrading from BT broadband to full fibre. Can I specify to BT that I want an ONT with more than one ethernet port rather than the standard single port ?
My existing BT socket comes into the study where I have a local ethernet RJ6 hardwired local network which currently runs off the BT hub via an extender. It would be useful to have the ONT in the same location as the existing entry point and to be able to plug in an cable there for my study wired network and to have the other cable run off to the router in the lounge.
Not sure you appreciate what the Ethernet socket on the ONT is for , a single service only requires one ‘connection’ to the router input , the ONT connects to a single router , a multi port ONT can be used if the customer has several services simultaneously , upto a maximum of four , the four ports on the multi port ONT would connect to 4 separate routers , a multi port ONT simply saves having multiple single port ONTs each requiring a power outlet hung on the wall ….how you set up your own network, ‘downstream’ of the router doesn’t affect the ONT.
You can’t have a multiport ONT with a single service that only requires a single port ONT , its pointless but to get a chance that a multiport will be supplied you would have to have at least two separate services , even then OR could fit a second single port ONT ) you would have to ask the second ISP to specify a multiport ONT , to replace the existing ONT
The ONT is just a modem, it still needs to connect to a router.
As others have said the ONT is simply for connecting the BT hub not to run any devices. Anything you need to run on an ethernet cable will need to be plugged into the BT hub
