Upgrading to full fibre - where can the ONT be installed?

Full fibre is now available in my town so I'm thinking of upgrading.  The current master socket in my house is in an upstairs bedroom at the back of the house and that's where I've got my desktop PCs, network switch, NAS, etc. so I can connect everything via ethernet; if I upgrade to fibre, will the ONT be able to be installed in this upstairs bedroom?

I've seen a few other full fibre installs in other places and they all have the ONT installed in the downstairs living room at the front of the house.

Thanks for any info.

Re: Upgrading to full fibre - where can the ONT be installed?

Where does the existing copper feed ‘hit’ the property at the front or at the rear , and is it an overhead feed from a telegraph pole or  an underground feed ? .

If (as an example )  someone was served from a pole at the front , and the property were a mid terrace, and they wanted the ONT fitted at the rear , then it’s probably not going to be acceptable to cable internally front to back as there is no possible external route front to back , basically they won’t spend hours cabling internally to get from front to rear , so in this case any insistence that the ONT can only be at the rear will probably result in the installation person leaving site and the order being cancelled as the consumer having unreasonable demands.

The router is connected to the ONT by an Ethernet cable , you are are at liberty to supply and fit your own Ethernet cable connection from the ONT location ( if it had to be sited at the front of the property ) to the router location if you wanted that at the rear .

Basically it’s a case of reasonableness, if what you want is reasonable it will be done , if it’s unreasonable or unrealistic it won’t be done

@StevenF001

To add to @iniltous's comments, the ethernet cable that connects the ONT to the router can be up to 100 metres long, (though I have seen a maximum of 85 metres recommended!).

Just make sure that the cable is spec'd as CAT5E, (the 'E' is important), or better.

Re: Upgrading to full fibre - where can the ONT be installed?

Thanks for your reply - it helps me understand the process 😀  The current copper cable is run from a telegraph pole to the side of my house (semi-detached) and it enters the house next to a window on the upstairs landing; from there it runs to the rear bedroom where the master socket is located.

The full fibre installs in my town are also being run from the telegraph poles rather than underground so hopefully it will be reasonable to have the ONT installed in the rear bedroom.  Thinking about it, there aren't any power sockets at all on the upstairs landing so the ONT can't be installed there.

Re: Upgrading to full fibre - where can the ONT be installed?

@Paul608085   The reason for the 85m is that although the spec. says the equipment & cable should be able to send the signal 100m without significant errors, the 100m figure is based on ideal lab test conditions, with top quality cable, a perfect install and the wind in the right direction and the 100m also includes the length of any patch/station cables at each end.  Real-world techies don’t push it beyond 80 - 85m.

If your property is a semi detached and overhead service, then installing at in a rear bedroom should probably be OK , and follow the existing cabling closely, although it’s quit possible that the cable will attach at height , run down to the wall , then cable on wall to the rear of the property and back up to 1st floor height to minimise the amount of time / work required on a ladder , as with all these things , discuss with the installer on the day

Some Openreach contractors refuse to work off ladders and demand scaffolding to be erected to work at heights. It's pot luck whether you get an Openreach technician or an Openreach contractor for your installation
