Upload speed capped at 20Mbps by SH2 on Full fibre 900

Go to solution

Hi,

I've upgraded to Full Fibre 900 broadband on the 12th October. My download speeds are pretty much as promised by BT. However my upload speeds are only ever 20Mbps. I have hard reset the router (SH2) a number of times and upload speeds come up to 40 Mbs for a couple of days before going back to 20Mbps again. When I plug my old router in I get upload speeds of 110Mbps.

I have digital voice and the 'unbreakable' EE router so cannot stop using the SH2 router to get around this. I was wondering if a patch could help resolve this issue with my SH2 as I have seen that this is a recognised issue amongst other users. Thanks.

The soft cap on the ‘upload’   on some SH2’s was 50Mb ( not 20 Mb ) and was normally removed automatically after the SH2 had been left connected for a few days ( an over the air update ) , it doesn’t seem like that’s the issue with your router , especially as you say a restart gives you 110Mb which then reverts to 20Mb .
Presumably you need to report this , in the first instance a new SH2 would be the obvious step ( given that you state a different router provides the correct upload ) if the replacement SH2 shows the same issues then it may need the actual active elements of the PON looking at ( your ONT , the headend/ OLT etc )

Thanks iniltous,

The problem is with the SH2 as my old hub shows normal speeds up and down when it is connected. The SH2 has only ever managed 50Mbps upload after a hard reset and not the 110Mbps that my old router has. I've seen a lot of people had this issue and it was resolved by the MOD's without a new router or engineer visit, which would be nice.

many posters with the 50mb upload problem had the problem resolved by as @iniltous just connecting the SH2 and leaving it connected for a few days with no intervention from openreach or mods

Sorry , reseting your router temporarily gives 40Mb upload ( not 110Mb ) but that’s not really the point I was making , if your SH2 were affected by the software cap it would be a 50Mb upload limit ( a speed you haven’t achieved with your existing SH2 ) that suggests it’s not a software cap , it’s another ‘issue’ , potentially needing you to have a replacement router , if that fails to restore the upload , then the active parts of the network would be under suspicion.
I doubt switching the router off and on , hard resets , and even a forced software download will fix a hardware fault .
The chances are if you called to report this issue , the first port of call would be a replacement router dispatched, the new router is unlikely to be shipped with the old software cap.
I don’t really understand your reluctance to do this , if you want to pursue the software cap angle , as already stated leave your SH2 connected , when it’s automatically ‘polled’ if updated software is required it should update , if after a few days no change the BT Mods may be able to arrange a forced download if it hasn’t automatically updated, but it wouldn’t explain why your cap is 20Mb and not 50Mb , and why restarting the hub lifts it to 40Mb for a short time , basically your symptoms don’t align with that known ( and increasing rare ) 50Mb cap issue.

Thanks imjolly,

The SH2 has been connected near continuously since it was fitted on the 12/10. Briefly disconnected 12 days ago to check the connection with my old BT home hub modem/router (which showed 700Mbps Down and 110Mbps upload) then it's (SH2) been left connected after a hard reset for  over 10 days. Download speeds were 50Mbps straight after the reset now its 20Mbps.

Thanks,

The SH2 did hit 50Mbps after the hard reset. Then down to 20Mbps. There was a period after when it was around 40Mbps but that may have simply been due to the fact I was testing the router some distance away.

Happy to report it, no real reluctance, but didn't want BT to send a new hub if that's not required, hence why I posted first.

TBH , all your ‘tests’ need to be from a wired device, not wireless, so distance shouldn’t be an issue

Sorry, last sentence should read "Upload speeds were 50Mbps straight after the reset now its 20Mbps"
