If I order an upgrade to fibre......when the the engineer visits to instal and I am not happy with the installation
i.e possible digging up driveway or garden, can I then cancel the order at that stage without penalty ?
Yes but why order it if you are so worried!
If they have to dig they will reinstate it to how it was.
How is your broadband currently provided - from pole or underground from street?
Yes...it is underground
Yes, if they come and it needs to dig then you can just refuse it and cancel the order.
It’s pretty easy to establish if your copper service is delivered underground if excavation is going to be necessary when ordering FTTP , if you have a ducted feed then there will be evidence of the duct coming up against an external wall, this was the standard installation method from the very early 1990’s onwards, earlier housing built in the 1960’s through to the early 1990’s was armoured cables buried directly in the ground….so if your house was built in the early 1990’s or later , then no excavation should be needed as a duct should already exist , with the proviso that the existing duct may be blocked or damaged and needs excavation, if the house was built before the 1990’s and is underground service , then excavation will definitely be needed….given your reluctance to agree to excavation , if you know excavation is going to be needed , it’s pointless to order then cancel when the tech turns up , that just wastes your time and Openreach’s time .
If this is a bit ‘vague’ for your liking, put your address in here , it has a survey note , if it says something like , Single Dwelling Unit Residential UG Feed with no anticipated issues, then chances are you won’t need any excavation, if it’s says built to the curtilage or partial DIG you will need excavation.

You'll be be cutting of your nose to spite your face. FFTP is vastly superior. Just work with openreach to find a solution.
