Bereavement in 2022

Hi

i just wanted to ask if this was correct because even after all this time I still don’t feel it is right.

i was the account holder at the time.  My husband passed easy after a long battle with cancer in January 2022 and due to the financial circumstances at that time I had to move away to stay with a relative for a few months and try to sell my home.    When I rang BT to cancel my contract I was told I would have to pay the full price of ending contract early.    I just admit I was very shocked when I was charged over £900 which with difficulty I paid at the time.

has this happened to anyone else and is it correct?   I’m  still wondering but so difficult to speak to anyone about it.  Thank you

Re: Bereavement in 2022

Unfortunately because you were the account holder and not your late husband, you would be subject to cancellation fees if you terminated your account when it was still within the Fixed Term Contract.

As regards the cost of what you would have to pay the following link will show what the cost would be.

Obviously I have no idea what advice if any that you were given but if you had to move house, you could have used the "House Move" procedure to move your BT account to the new address. While this would most likely not have saved you any money it would at least have let you keep the BT account you had and avoid a cancellation fee.
