I think I've messed up - One Time Switch (OTS)

Hi all, as the title suggests - I think I've messed up the switching process.

Full disclosure, and long story short - after receiving an email from BT stating that our contract was up, and seeing what we were paying for the broadband and TV package (compared to a Vodafone package) - I phoned BT to potentially negotiate a better deal.

Unfortunately, there was no negotiating and 5 days ago I ended up just informing the BT team member that we will not be renewing the contract, and instructed them to cancel. Received an email later the day after from BT saying they were sad to see us leave etc.

After some googling and digging around on this very forum about the best way to switch, I have just discovered  the relatively new (to me anyway!) OTS switching - and the fear is that I have cocked up the switching process.

I have yet to sign a contract with a new broadband provider, after learning of OTS, just incase I muddy the waters even more than I currently have.

Our current BT broadband contract coms to an end on the 12th March - any advice guys?

Thanks for reading.

Re: I think I've messed up - One Time Switch (OTS)

Did you tell them that you were leaving BT and will cancel your broadband or that you were just not going to renew your fixed term contract?

If you told them you were leaving BT and cancelling that means exactly that and the process will start. You will probably get an email to the effect that BT are sorry to see you go etc.

If you said that you would not be renewing your contract and made no mention of leaving BT or cancelling your broadband you should just go onto a thirty day rolling contract. This would mean that you would lose any discount that you may have had on your broadband package but other than that it would just remain the same as you have now.

To give your self peace of mind you could call BT 0330.1234.150 and ask them what the status your account is.

The other option would be to wait and see and meanwhile organise with your chosen provider to start the move.

Hi DS thanks for the reply.

I did infact cancel the contract and received the email from BT confirming this.

I have now edited the original post to make that clear.

Cheers.

Process is now underway. I do not know how easy it will be to stop the process but you could call BT and explain what you have done. Make sure you tell them you do not want to start a new contract.

It may mean that there will not be a seamless change over which could result in you being without a connection.

Re: I think I've messed up - One Time Switch (OTS)

FWIW, the older system that OTS replaced was the same in that it’s gaining provider led , with the old system you contacted the new provider only and they served notice on your behalf, you didn’t contact the losing provider yourself, so in that respect OTS is irrelevant, you would have messed up with the old system as well .
