Broadband Upgrade

Hi,

My broadband is being upgraded from copper to fibre at the end of February. We’ve also just got our email regarding resigning up to BT and been given our options and I’m a little stumped about what package to go for.

Our offers were:

Fibre essential £28.99

Full fibre 900 £42.39

Full fibre 900 Halo 3 £48.99

We’re a 2 person household which generally use broadband for streaming, a download here or there and some working from home. I think, at most, we only ever have some streaming going on and a download simultaneously.

our broadband at the moment is painfully slow so anything is going to be better, I just don’t want to end up paying for something we don’t need so any opinions would be deeply appreciated.

Re: Broadband Upgrade

Do not go for Full Fibre Halo. It is very difficult if in the future you wish to downgrade from it and the benefits that you get from it are not worth the money.

There should be more choices available to you. Use this checker to see what is shown.

In a household such as what you have described I would suggest that you do not need a package any higher than 500Mbps and any lower than 150Mbps.

@ApCosLu

To be honest, you probably wouldn’t need any more than 150mbps, anything else based on your stated needs would probably be overkill.

Think very very carefully about going down the Halo route. Type Halo into the search box and read the threads yourself about those that sign themselves up to it and then those who find it doesn’t deliver and then can’t get out of it.

Ultimately it’s your decision, but I’d suggest the 900mbps speeds would be pointless in your scenario. My Wife WFH we’re on FTTP and on 500mbps and even that is overkill for us as we can get by perfectly well on 300mbps even with 30 wireless devices constantly connected.

Edit: clearly myself and @gg30340   are very much on the same page, we posted within a minute of each other so I apologise if it looks like a repeat of the same thing.

Re: Broadband Upgrade

Thanks both - will definitely avoid Halo 3!
I didn’t even think of looking if there were any other packages available.

All your info was really helpful!

Like I said, we are used to incredibly slow broadband (even OpenReach couldn’t believe how slow it was) so will definitely look for a 150mpbs - 300mbpsdeal!

Best of luck with whatever you do. Just be careful if/when you speak to the call centre, it’s their job to upsell. Don’t allow yourself to be talked into signing up for a package that isn’t appropriate.

Also, be aware you might be pushed toward an EE product which may or may not be good thing. If that happens, you’ll just become an EE customer whether you want to be or not. Essentially, the same thing to be honest, but make sure you know what is being flogged to you.
