Charged for ceasing within notice period

Genuinely confused by what has happened.

I rang BT to cancel BT Sports (TNT sports) as no longer offered what I wanted.

Having been with BT a long time I am well out of any fixed contract and when I spoke to the rep he said that as my monthly renewal was due on the day of calling (a coincidence on my part) it could be cancelled immediately with removal of the package that day - which happend- and nothing further to pay.

I was surprised to see a further amount come out of my bank account.

Logged in to billing to see:

"There's a TV/rentalLiabilityCharge for ceasing within the notice period"

So basically it looks like I've ended up paying 30 days without having the benefit of access to the channels.

I would have been quite happy to give required notice, but what I'm not at all happy with is paying for something and receiving nothing - particularly as I was explicitly told there was nothing more to pay.

Before I end up going nuclear on some poor soul at the end of a phone, has anyone got any advice please?

Re: Charged for ceasing within notice period

you have a 30 day notice period hence the charge

Re: Charged for ceasing within notice period

You are correct in thinking you should either  still receive the service during the notice period , or not be charged if the switch off is immediately after contacting BT to quit, BT effectively waiving the notice period , you obviously know you are no longer receiving the service , so it’s reasonable to question why the payment was taken , or ask for the service to be restored for the notice period…this assumes you are not within a minimum term , I suppose another possibility is that when you took this service you paid in arrears, so watched the first month , then paid at the end of it , so the payment taken was for the month you just watched, not for the coming month.

Re: Charged for ceasing within notice period

Hi,

thanks for your reply but I’m aware of the notice period so don’t get me wrong I was pleasantly surprised when it was waived so I didn’t have to pay more.

What is annoying me is that I’m now effectively paying for a service that I’m not getting when I would have happily complied, paid the same, and had one more month of viewing.
