Charges for Renewing Existing Broadband Contract vs New Customer

Hi,

I'm sure this topic has been discussed many times, but I'm interested to know what others think about my particular situation.

My current Fibre Halo 3 Broadband contract with BT is up for renewal in November. Recently, I received an offer from BT to renew my contract now for a slightly reduced price;

Broadband Renewal Offer from BTBroadband Renewal Offer from BT

What caught my eye was the wording about their Price promise;

Never pay more than a new customer when you renew your contract. No exceptions.

So, I checked out prices for new customers and while there was no Fibre Halo 3 on offer there was a Fibre 2 which appears to offer that exact same speeds and guarantees, but for a much cheaper monthly price;

Intrigued by their price promise, I called BT and was told that as I my contract doesn't expire until November, the  price promise is not applicable to me as I'm not able to renew my contract until then. When I explained that their offer was to renew now they simply reiterated what they'd said earlier.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Do you think I should push back and get BT to honour their price promise or have I completely misunderstood?

Regards, Steve.

Sadly Halo 3 is the hotel california of broadband

Your price matched to the equivalent Halo 3 even though that is not available to new customers

Be prepared to leave in November for a better deal.

@tech-otaku

As above, you've fallen for a marketing scam that along with John Lewis' "Never knowingly undersold", is probably a hair's width the right side of legal. You have two options:

  1. Spend hours on the phone arguing with BT's droids, who have been programmed to extract every penny they can from you & will promise the moon on a stick if you renew.
  2. A month before your contract ends, use a cashback site to evaluate what's on offer elsewhere & just place an order with them.

IMO, life is far too short for option 1...

@Kodikid

Thanks for this.

I can checkout any time I like, but I can never leave?

That's what I was thinking.
