Contract expiring late April 2026 -

Go to solution

I'm current broadband/TV contract with BT expires late April 2026.

Currently receiving

Halo 3 (part fibre)broadband....@ £43.02 p/m  - increasing by £3 p/m on 31st March, and additional £3 pm PAYG calling plan !

TV Entertainment package .... @ £10 p/m - (reduced from £22 p/m) - increasing by £2 p/m om 31st March

BT Mobile (2gb data increased to 4gb via Halo 3) ... @ £7.20 - (reduced from £12.20 p/m - BT Broadband discount)  - increasing by £0.50 on 31st March.

Total £60.22    (£68.72   from 31st March) - 14%+ increase !

It seems that when my contract expires.... my TV package will increase to at least £22+ p/m.

What options is there.....  BT currently doesn't have any deals.... I've been in touch !

"you are still in contract until 23/04/2026, i would recommend coming back to us a little closer to the end of the plan to see if we have anything different, we would also not be able to apply the same discounts you have currently."

I'm thinking -

downgrade broadband to Fibre 2    -  this gives me the same speed as Halo 3  (part fibre), and remove calling plan (use mobile to make calls, haven used landline to make calls for many years).
Stop TV package,  as I don't use the BT box... (use TV apps to access Now TV/Netflix via current BT/EE contract)

go to Now TV direct for Now TV Entertainment  (has current off of £2.99 for 12 months)
go to Netflix direct for their £5.99 monthly package.
never used Discovery + - thus no need to go to Discovery for the package.

retain BT mobile (2gb data) - however, will lose double mobile data that I was receiving with Halo 3, but never really went over 2gb

Would BT allow me to 'downgrade' to Fibre 2 broadband, remove landline element,  and retain mobile (mobile discount to be retained, as I would be receiving broadband from BT), and allow me to obtain my TV package directly from NowTV/Netflix

This I believe would reduce my billing (by at least £20 p/m) without losing what I currently use - current broadband speed would be the same , TV viewing would be same (apart from going direct to Now TV/Netflix)  & Mobile would be the same (apart from reduced data, which I may never exceed)

@shawny1967  You could for a start help yourself by ditching Halo3 🤷‍♂️ Do you need Halo?

BT will not allow you to "downgrade"  your Fixed Term Contract at this stage. You would need to be nearer your contract end date.

Do your home work and see what other providers have to offer. Make sure you compare like for like. ie Broadband only with out a landline, no Halo etc etc.

As has been suggested you should cancel the Halo add on in any event. It is just an expensive package of add ons that most if not all people do not need and certainly not at the price BT charge.

Once you know what other providers have to offer contact BT Retentions Team  0800 783 1401 and see what they can offer you to stay with BT.

You may find that if you are prepared to migrate to EE Broadband which uses the same infrastructure as well as you  can keep your BTMail email addresses as they are at the moment, you will be offered better deals than staying with BT.

If they can not offer what you want be prepared to walk away and take up the offer from one of the other providers that you looked at.

Homework done, just waiting for the day I can change ....

Currently paying £63.22 p/m increasing to £68.72 (31st Mar) then to £78.72 when contract finishes.

Downgrade Halo 3 to Fibre 2 -   download speed doesn't change.  Approx £25.99 p/m

Cancel TV, and go direct to Now TV & Netflix   (return TV box back to BT ) - Now TV £2.99 (offer for 12 months)/ Netflix £5.99 p/m

BT Mobile (4gb data) - Change to Asda Mobile 10gb sim - £8.00  p/m

Total : Approx £43 p/m    - saving over £20  a month.....   can't see BT matching this.....

Well done you

With now entertainment at £2.99 for a year only a mad person would buy it though EE

You could have got cheaper broadband elsewhere but obviously quality matters.

Re: Contract expiring late April 2026 -

Contacted BT and was hoping that they would change my package to Fibre 2 (and in addition remove EE TV package) leaving me with just Broadband cost of £25.99  as a new customer would receive.

The retentions team, offered to do this but with the monthly cost being £31.99

When I mentioned that the Halo 3 price promise states "offered same deal as new customer", t

hey said it was not possible, due to it being a different package.

In that case... I said I  cancelling, and moving to another supplier - they do this now, they calculated a cancellation fee of £8.43

I've now taken up Plusnet's off of £22.99 a month (with £80 gift card) , and now awaiting for Plusnet to transer me from BT to their system.

I received, email from BT stating that the cancellation charge is £22.29 - I assume this is an automated response, on which I'm going to challenge, when I receive my final billing.

I received an email on 17th Feb, stating BT price increases I will be receiving on 31st March , on which it clearly states "We've moved you onto our latest pound and pence terms, this means your prices will now change by a fixed amount each March.....you don't have to do anything, but you have the option to cancel your broadband without charge, due to the changes made to your produce."

Hence, with me switching to Plusnet, I should not have to pay a cancellation fee of the £22.29 stated in the email, (or even the £8.43 quoted by the rententions team).

They had their chance of retaining a customer of 10 years +, but recalling the problems I had back in 2024 when I renewed my contract (they renewed my TV service, without renewing by broadband, resulting with me losing the service , taking them almost 10 days to rectified) - leaving was the only option.

With taking my services elsewhere, will have same broadband speed, TV packages, and enhanced mobile package, with a saving of over £300 a year, compared with what I'm currently paying.

working out my billing - 14th March billing of £60.22 will be paid for services up to 13th April, however, I will be leaving BT on 23rd March    - I'm calculating a refund of approx £40.

What if the email address to send copies of the emails received, etc if I need to challenge the final bill.

£19.42 Charge

£40.80 credit

Early Termination Fee (should be £0 per email)

Re: Contract expiring late April 2026 -

Received 13 letters in post today, telling me what's owed due to me finishing my contract early.

13 letters stating I owe them £25.57 in cancellation charges - differs to what I was informed and differs from the 'Price update email' which clearly stated I could cancel without charge.

As I has paid in advance, working out the unused period, I estimate I am owed £40+ plus.

Why is this not showing on my billing.

Why does my billing says I owe £25.57 in cancellation charges.

Why was I sent 13 letters informing me that I owe £25.57 in cancellation charges.

I have sent email to customer relations to have this £25.57 charge waived, and to pay the overpayment of the £40+ on the next billing cycle of 22nd April (or sooner)

I thought the billing process would be simple....

Paid in advance , credit to be paid back.

No termination fee, as laid out in email.

All equipment sent back - no charges

The comms are automatic so it should be waived based on what you said. You'll.also be due a final bill with pro rata refunds after cancelkling too

Re: Contract expiring late April 2026 -

Final bill received today - and it's giving me credit for the advance payment , but still charged me the £25.57 cancellation charge.

Thus resulting  a chat session to have the cancellation charge removed.

Maybe I'll receive a further 13 in-necessary letters via the post, informing me of the change
