You mention Money Expert, if their badges claim that they are endorsed by Martin Lewis then they are almost certainly NOT genuine. Martin knows this is going on and is Fuming about it, he's said as much on his social media pages

They didn't mention Martin Lewis, to be fair. I rang BT to cancel the order and the lady was fully aware of them and didn't seem fazed, though she did acknowledge I'd been given false information.

I suspect the salesperson meant that it was possible to continue using a Virgin email address with BT broadband

They should have told you that they weren't in a position to say if it was possible to keep your virgin address and referred you back to virgin to answer that.
