Home phone service a lot better letter

We received this letter today from bt.

ber 2025

Your home phone service is about to get a whole lot better

Hello,

The time has come for the UK's home phone network to undergo a major revamp. We've included an Important Information leaflet with this letter, which offers extra guidance. We suggest holding onto this.

To ensure you get the very best service now and in the future, and to say thank you for your continued support, we're upgrading your current landline-for free.

What happens next?

1

We'll be in touch with a date to upgrade your home phone. Don't worry, you don't need any new equipment.

2

On the day of the upgrade, the engineer will carry out work remotely at the telephone exchange.

Please be aware that your phone line will be disrupted for about an hour.

3

You'll receive an automated message informing you that the upgrade is complete.

However, in the rare case an engineer discovers an issue, they may need to attend your property.

Please don't worry your service will continue to work after the switchover.

Key details to be aware of post-upgrade

Please test any healthcare alarms, medical pendants and security systems that you rely on with your new phone service to make sure they work properly. Any alarms you have may bleep during the service outage and will stop once the work is completed.

You can continue to use your current phone and phone number and don't need any new equipment.

Re: Home phone service a lot better letter

Yes, it's definitely about a migration to digital voice.
BT won't move your master socket, but you can get adapters (the first one free) that plug into any electricity socket in the house and into which you plug the phone, so you don't need the master socket to be moved.
This should all be explained in the leaflet enclosed with the letter.
Regarding "you won't need any new equipment" - does your mother already have a BT SmartHub 2? This has a green socket on its back into which you can plug a phone - and has the ability to remotely connect with the adapters.
If she does NOT have this then you may need to get in touch with BT so they can send you one.

Re: Home phone service a lot better letter

No she just has the old line no broadband but her master socket is u def stairs cupboard by gas main.  And the leaflet said if they need to do anything they will do it for free. So I told her to wait till they send her second letter giving more details on what they going to do and send. House was built in 70s so master socket was put in worst place and as he is disabled they should move the master socket to living room which will be nearest location for the box outside house

Re: Home phone service a lot better letter

I think there may be a long delay until you hear anything more from BT about this DV migration. If your Mother has no broadband at all, then a yet-to-be-decided-by-BT arrangement will be needed to provide her with a "cut down" broadband connection on which the DV will be carried.
For that reason, BT customers with no broadband service are likely to be the last group migrated to DV - probably not until 2027
I think this is another case of BT sending out these letters to everyone without properly checking what service they currently have.
So, I wouldn't worry about this for the next couple of years!
