How do I cancel or downgrade the Unlimited Calls on my landline account

Go to solution

I currently have Halo 1 and have been out of contract for some time.  The cost of the unlimited Landline calls on the account is about £22 a month - my usage for the last two months was less than 30 min.  I tried going through the online manage your account pages but there is no option to cancel or downgrade from this unlimited call plan.
How do I do this?
(Surely it goes against ofcom guidelines to be unable to change this?)

We have been on the digital (via broadband) landline for over a year.

you should be able to go to MYBT probably better using web browser and manage your phone and then change call package to PAYG.  if problems then phone CS 03301234150 and they should help.  you could also try billing using message now in this link   https://www.bt.com/help/contact-bt/account-and-billing/broadband

You can change your calling plan online if you wish via your MyBT but to cancel your landline phone you will need to call BT.

This will as far as I can recall mean that your Broadband package will require you to start a new Fixed Term Contract.

You do not need to have a Halo package unless you have an express wish to have one. I would suggest it is an expensive add on that most people do not need or use.

You should call BT 0330.1234.150 and see what they can offer.

They will no doubt try and upsell you another Halo package so be insistent if you do not want that.

Prior to calling do a bit of research with other Broadband providers to see what they charge but make sure you are comparing like for like and if BT do not offer what you want just move to another provider.

If you do move from BT if you have a BTMail account this will be downgraded to the BTMail Basic account which is free but can only be used with a web browser and not with an email client or email app.

You would need to get a BTPremium email account at £7.50 per month if you want to retain the ability to use a n email client or app.

Thanks gg30340
I don't really want to cancel my landline entirely, but the MyBT pages did NOT allow me to downgrade. The options given were to
"Stay on current" (Which is the Unlimited Minutes)
OR
"Unlimited Minutes"
So I can move from what I have ... to exactly the same as I have with the same cost (£21.88pm)
Why is there no option to downgrade ?
I took the unlimited minutes as an add on - now I seem to be unable to cancel it.

@Hellaquin  BT don't want you to 'downgrade' without you talking to them.

I suggest doing as you've already been advised. If you don't need Halo, call BT and TELL them you don't want it and to change your package to one that suits your circumstances. You're out of contract, it's now entirely up to you what you do. But do be assertive. Don't allow yourself to be talked into something you don't want or need.

Be aware, you may well be steered to the EE side of the business. That may not necessarily be a bad option IF you are offered a contract that suits you. EE is BT so I wouldn't be worried about swapping over if required.

There is clearly something wrong if the stay as you are ‘button’ means Unlimited Minutes and the alternative is also Unlimited Minutes, so unfortunately you will need to call as the online ‘self service’ options are incorrect , it’s also an odd amount you pay , Unlimited is £18 and doesn’t usually have  any in-term  increases (unlike the annual broadband price increase ) and for many can be negotiated to around £12 a month .

FYI , calling may be preferable anyway as if the self select option were available,  it would be £5 for PAYG , but calling will almost certainly get you offered PAYG  for £3 , although this may be considered re-contracting and extended your minimum term which you may not want .
