Moving address

I notified BT on their website that I am moving address. My speed just now is 74Mbs and I have 700 minutes per month telephone package. I clicked on staying on the same package and notified my moving date. I then received an email saying that my broadband speed would be 50Mbs. How is that the same package? I telephoned BT and spoke to 3 different people but no-one could help me stay on the same speed for the same price that I am paying just now. The last person in sales informed me that I would have to pay an extra £12 per month for the same package that I am on now. Why can't no-one help me.

Re: Moving address

Your connection speed is determined by the distance you are from your street cabinet. I appears that your new home is further from the street cabinet than your existing home is from the cabinet hence the lower speed

Enter your new address which will show what is available post results including notes please

Re: Moving address

As stated if you are on FTTC then it’s the distance the address is from the cabinet that dictates the speed you can get ….if 50Mb is the appropriate speed the new address can get it’s because of distance the address is from its cabinet ( that’s how the physics of FTTC work ) as explained your new address is apparently further away from its cabinet than your existing address is from its cabinet  that’s why a slower speed is available, if you moved to an address that was closer to its cabinet than your current address is to it’s cabinet you would get better than 74Mb , but TBH you must currently be very close to the cabinet at the moment.

700 mins is also problematic in that it’s a call plan that  doesn’t seem to be available anymore , so when you move , you have to take a current plan , so you may be offered the Unlimited Minutes as the closest plan,  but it’s a little more expensive.

TBH , if moving address , I’d be more inclined to call and go through the details with an advisor rather than doing it online .

You obviously have the choice to use someone else at the new address and not use BT ,  but you would then be liable for the early termination charges for the remaining months on your contract .

Re: Moving address

@Mikeforever2025  How long do you have left to run on your current contract? Weigh up the cost of early termination against the increased overall cost on any proposed change in package from BT. If it isn’t competitive, look at other providers. Have you fully researched exactly what is available at the address you are moving to?

Re: Moving address

As you appear to be on a Fibre to the Cabinet package, moving to a different Internet Supplier still using FTTC will make no difference to your speed as you will still be using the same infrastructure to get the Internet to your house.

The only way you will get better speeds would be if you can get Fibre to the Premises. If you can get FTTP then you will be able to select a faster package.

Re: Moving address

TBH , if FTTP were available at the ‘new’ address , then as a default that would be used , the OP wouldn’t have to option to take FTTC , even if the previous occupant of the address was  using FTTC previously, so there would be no need to have a lower speed profile

Re: Moving address

I am on FTTP at my old address and will also be at my new address (new build).  So I do not understand why I was not offered the same speed.

Re: Moving address

My current contract with BT will end in June 2026. The broadband provider at my new address has been set up to use Hyperoptic,  but I do not know anything about them. Are they reliable?

Re: Moving address

If your new address has Openreach FTTP , then there is absolutely no reason why you can’t take exactly the same F2 speed profile as you currently have   , and the F2 services  will be identical , FTTP  is not rate adaptive like FTTC  ,  so the service will be exactly the same at the new address, it’s unfathomable why it’s not being automatically offered to you but a slower F1 product.

I suspect your enquiry/order using on line tools is causing the problem and if Openreach FTTP is available then there is no reason why a human can’t arrange for you to keep the same F2 product that you currently have ..the 700mins call plan  may be a different matter.

As far as commenting on competitors and their products, that’s not appropriate on this forum , you obviously can do your own research….obviously if you chose to use a competitor then early termination charges are applicable as you are not fulfilling your contractual obligations when a ‘home mover’ option is available .

Are you sure OR FTTP is available, some developers lock out Openreach and arrange a sweetheart deal with some other network provider, so the only choice the occupant has is to take service from the developers choice of network…(or not have a landline type service ) ,however if that were the case you wouldn’t be able to get any type of OR based service….

New build is often a misused term , you say new build,  but is it ‘brand new’  (although it can’t really be as you are not the first occupant) , but how old is the property, some may refer to a 10 year old property as ‘new build’ but back then OR FTTP wouldn’t necessarily be provided as standard as it is today and has been for 7-8 years , copper pairs were still used back then  if that was the developers choice
