The OP (me) didn't get it sorted unfortunately.

The only option available was to telephone them prior to me logging in and they would remove the requirement for the OTP.

This was a one shot application, so each time I want to connect to check my bill etc, I had to call them again.
Nice and convenient.

Sometimes it could use my land-line for authentication, and I would get an SMS to voice call, but I gave up with that as the login timed out way before I received the call, especially if I tried in the evening, I would not get the call until 08:30 the next morning, and multiple calls at that.

They were not able to supply the OTP via email for some reason. Just another valued customer alienated!
Oh, they wanted to send me paper bills but charge me for the privilege!

Anyway, after years of being with BT, I am no longer with them!
