Re: BT Cancelled my account in error... now I have no internet for nearly 3 weeks - what to do?

Please help! Did you get this resolved

On Monday 13.7.26 BT cut off our landline and broadband for no reason!

My elderly mother lives with us and uses a telecare lifesaver pendant which now is not working!

I called them this morning and got passed around until I ended up at the Executive Complaints team and spoke with a very unsympathetic ‘Mel’.

She said I had asked another provider to take over the service which we most certainly did not!

She then said it would take TWO WEEKS for them to reinstate our landline and broadband!

Please can SOMEONE help as we work and cannot leave Mum now in case she has a fall!!!

BT is at fault but treats us like we caused this mayhem to happen!

Re: BT Cancelled my account in error... now I have no internet for nearly 3 weeks - what to do?

The switching service doesn’t have any real ‘checks’ (  the regulator demanded no impediments to switching) so things like slamming (an unscrupulous provider signing up as customer that hasn’t implicitly agreed to join that company) or misidentifying an address (basically someone entering your address into an online ordering system or giving the wrong address to a provider, either mistake or maliciously ) can cause these problems , to simply blame BT is likely to be wrong .

The only way to realise something is wrong , is if , seemingly out of the blue , you receive a communication from the existing provider ( email or letter ) saying ‘sorry you are leaving, this is the impact of that decision’ going on to outline the charges that may ensue, if the minimum term hasn’t been completed for example , and also the way to cancel this migration to another provider if it’s an error or the customer has changed their mind .

Did you (or whoever the account is in the name of ) receive any such communication , you need to check in things like the spam folder for emails etc …..it’s very unlikely that BT arbitrarily ceased this account fir no reason , and almost certainly were told by the switching service that a new provider was ‘taking over’ your service, the systems in place that allow this type of thing to happen are because Ofcom place the switching providers requirement for no barriers ahead of the customers potentially being slammed , there used to be a two stage switch , there is now a one stage ( one touch ) switching setup , and isn’t BT’s ‘design’, and can hardly be held responsible for its failings

Re: BT Cancelled my account in error... now I have no internet for nearly 3 weeks - what to do?

Another potential issue created by Ofcom is the timescale. Before OTS the defaults switching time was 10 working days, so plenty of time for comms to come through & to act in case of error. Ofcom have removed the default & also removed the option for a "losing" supplier to cancel. So it's entirely possible for a switch to occur in a matter of days & you get the "Sorry you're leaving" email after the event. None of which helps you, just explains the pig's ear Ofcom made of the changes.

Sadly, I've never seen one of these errors promptly resolved,so I'd suggest contacting the telecare company & seeing if the alarm can be switched to operate with a SIM. Maybe also ask BT to send you a 4G mini hub to tide you over. Obviously both of these rely on you having decent signal at home.
