Unbelievable pricing for broadband in new property

Go to solution

I currently get 900mb for £40pcm.

I am moving house and the fastest speed is 65mb. Only, BT will be charging me £36pcm. What in the world are they playing at? I'm going to be completely ripped off! Surely this is some sort of scam they are playing?  For 150mb it is less than £20 at my current address, so how can they charge more for over 90% less?

Maybe your new property is not in a fibre area hence the FTTC speed

It would appear that your new address is not FTTP so you are getting FTTC.

Unlike FTTP where the speed you are getting is the speed you pay for. ie a 900Mbps package will deliver 900Mbps with a FTTC connection you pay the package price, in your case most likely an 80Mbps package but the actual speed you will get is dependant on how far your house is from the cabinet. The closer you are the faster your speed will be and conversely the further from the cabinet the slower the speed.

This is because the VDSL signal from the cabinet drops off over distance where as Fibre does not.

If you can not get FTTP with BT it is unlikely there will be any other supplier of FTTP unless Virgin have their infrastructure there.

If you are using the "House Move" procedure with BT, because they can supply you with Broadband regardless of which type of broadband, they have fulfilled their T&Cs of the Home Move procedure.

If you are not happy with that and want to go with a different supplier you will be hit with cancellation fees by BT and if there are only Internet suppliers that use the Openreach infrastructure you will end up with the same FTTC connection at the same speed albeit they might be cheaper.

If the price difference with a new supplier is good it might be worth paying the cancellations fees in the long run.

Unfortunately, broadband isn't like your electricity, gas, or water.  Most of what we pay is the service charge for provision, and not the data itself.

I only learn by making mistakes and owning up to them - boy do I learn a lot!
