Does anyone know if BT Virus Protect is a rebadge/Rebrand of Norton 360?
I ask because it is being reported that recent versions of Norton 360 have been installing and ethereum crypto miner as part of the suit.
It has been reported that this is now being done automatically and silently!
I phoned BT technical support who suggested that I ask here.
No idea if it is the same product but the cryptominer is signposted during installation of Norton 360 and according to the company's FAQ, the function must be activated by the users themselves.
The FAQ on the Norton website also states that if you have turned on Norton Crypto, but you no longer want to use the feature, you can disable it through your Norton Crypto dashboard.
If you want to uninstall it altogether users need to disable Norton Product Tamper Protection whic is there to protect the antivirus product from being disabled or deleted by malware, before using the usual Windows uninstall steps.
Installing this version of Norton it does not prompt you at any point about Norton Crypto or opting in or out, so the "feature" may not be part of the product offering and the EULA and supporting documents make no reference to Norton Crypto, however.....the executable for the cryptominer Ncrypt.exe is installed into \Program Files\Norton Security\Engine\22.21.9.25 as part of the installation.
Nothing appears in the registry related to Norton Crypto. There will be no uninstall option for just this, you will need to uninstall the whole package.
This support page dated August 2021 states that Norton Crypto is only available in the US currently.

FWIW.
Currently, not functioning in the UK.
The existing guidance regarding disabling the Norton Crypto Miner.
Typically, depending on your Norton product. Locate Ncrypt.exe.
C:\Program Files\Norton *****\Engine\22.21.11.46\NCrypt.exe
Disable Norton Tamper Protection, in the 'UI Administrative Settings'.
Rename / Move Ncrypt.exe. (nominally: Ncrypt2022.exe.)
Enable Norton Tamper Protection.
Run 'Get Support' from Norton Help, from the Norton UI. (A Self-Test.)
Reboot your system.
If the Norton Crypto Miner ever surfaces in the UK; watch out for HMRC.
