BT TV / IPTV / Multicast on Unifi UCG Ultra question

Hi all,

Hope someone can help with a solution that's been evading me for some weeks now.

I recently swapped my Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X-SFP for a Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra, and have not been able to get BT TV / IP TV working with the UCG, even with several suggestions from Ubiquiti tech help.

The ERX worked flawlessly, albeit with some tweaking when I first set it up some years ago, but can not recall what I did to get working unfortunately! But I had eth4 port connected directly to the BT TV box and eth0 to the ECI Openreach modem, with eth1 to the first switch.

I have FTTC at the moment, which is likely to change to FTTP in next month or so, but would like to at least get the existing setup working prior to change over (the digital voice thing will no doubt be another issue)!.

Anyway, I've tried direct connection to the BT TV box from UCG, and also from the US 16 PoE switch which is connected to the UCG, and playing with VLAN's and switching on all IPTV streaming / Multicast / IGMP options to no avail. All other streams such as Netflix, iPlayer etc work fine..

I'm no VLAN expert, so I may be missing something like VLAN ID or something?

The latest reply from Ubiquiti I've pasted below, and perhaps someone can translate into easier form to understand, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! cheers

"To investigate the root cause, we need to know if your ISP is providing separate VLANs for the Internet IPTV connections.

This is because, the UniFi Gateway's IGMP proxy feature allows streaming traffic to pass through from WAN to LAN, only if the Internet and IPTV connections are provided over the same connection. If the ISP is providing the IPTV connection over a separate VLAN, then it won't be possible for you to use the IPTV on the LAN side of the UCG-Ultra. The option would be to use a switch on the WAN side of the UCG-Ultra in the setup:- ISP device >> Switch >> UCG-Ultra. On the switch, 2 different ports must have the VLANs untagged/configured as native for the Internet and IPTV connections. Once done, the port which is configured for the Internet VLAN must be connected to the UCG-Ultra, and the port on which the IPTV VLAN is configured as Native, must have the IPTV connected."

Re: BT TV / IPTV / Multicast on Unifi UCG Ultra question

Hi @countrypaul

Thanks for your reply, yes I'd seen that, but was trying to get some 'formal' solution from Ubiquiti, and I couldn't answer their query regarding separate VLANS for Multicast / IPTV.

However as it's beginning to look like that udm-iptv tool might be the only solution out there, I tried it yesterday - it appeared to run OK, being able to choose BT as ISP and also the network / VLAN I'd set up, however it still did not fix the issue and  for some reason also stopped Netflix from streaming (just Netflix, all other services seemed OK!) and as I'm currently using Netflix to keep the family entertained had to re-instate a previous back-up sharpish...

I believe I had all the required prerequisites set up, but as it seems so many have used this tool successfully it may well be I screwed something up, anyway, as FTTP is only a few weeks away I may just run with it as is, and not have to go through another bunch of troubleshooting when I lose the current modem, figure what to do with digital voice etc.. ! be prepared for some more questions on that!

cheers...
