How do I turn on sub titles when available on this app ? I cannot see any on/off switch in the settings.

Subtitles aren't available on the live channels. On-demand titles that have subtitles have the s in a circle shown on their details page.
When you play the video, a white speech bubble will appear in the top right corner - tap to turn them on:
