Deleting auto-remembered addressees

My silver surfer mum dislikes Outlook and prefers to use her BT email account via webmail.  Her choice.  No problem.  FWIW, Firefox (auto updated), but the same issue I will now describe happens with Edge and Chrome when I try, and probably any browser as it looks like the data is being stored at BT.  O/S is auto-updated W10 Home.

She also does not want to maintain a contacts list and prefers to rely solely on auto collection.  Her choice, again.

The problem is that over the years she has mistyped very many addresses, every one of which appears in the To drop down that appears as she starts typing the addressee she wants.  The features in Settings / Contacts to manage auto collected display order don't help as everything is auto-collected.

Imagine that I am Fred Bloggs, so when she types Fred, the following appear as helpful suggestions:

In this hypothetical example, the penultimate address is clearly the only correct one, but she often selects others that she has messed up previously and wonders why her email gets rejected.

I have tried to purge her entire cached addressee list to start over again but without success.  I tried to succeed by deleting the bt.com cookie, purging all browser history since it was first used, and deleting all auto-collected addresses in the Contacts pane of the BT Mail website.  No joy.  She has nothing in the contacts folder called Main so this is not the cause.  I am now confident it is not a browser or cookie issue as the same issue happens in Edge and Chrome on her computer but the latter had never previously been used with her email account because I installed it today as part of troubleshooting the issue.

What else to try please?  I have not found a solution in this forum or elsewhere.  The ideal solution (for Mum) is one where I periodically delete the duff addresses from the list.

Thank you.

Re: Deleting auto-remembered addressees

Not sure if this will work as I have not tried it but have you tried going into the email account settings by clicking on her user name at the top right hand side then going to contacts in the left hand column. Once there untick all the selection boxes and click save.

Re: Deleting auto-remembered addressees

Thank you very much for responding, but that's effectively what I describe as having already done.  In Username / Settings / Contacts are three folders; Main (which is empty), Trash (which is empty), and Auto Collected (which is now empty but still the issue persists).

[Edited for spelling]

Re: Deleting auto-remembered addressees

What I suggested is not what you did. You emptied the contacts folders but you did not do as I suggested and enter the "Contacts" in the left hand column, not the menu bar, and untick the boxes or if you did that is not what you have described.

Re: Deleting auto-remembered addressees

Thanks for coming back.  I am now back home and trying to think what you mean (I don't use BT mail myself) so will read your instructions and try to follow them the next time I am at my mum's home.  Probably Friday or Saturday.  I will return, and have set a reminder for Sunday so I don't forget to.  Thanks again.

Not forgotten. Simply not visited yet. I will be back here as promised.
