Email Hacked?

Hi Folks,

Recently, I have been getting pornographic emails from what I thought was a spammer. Then suddenly today, I stopped receiving email. I went and changed my password and whilst doing that noticed that all of a sudden I have 2 email addresses, one of which is not visible? I have only ever had one email address for more than 25 years.

Even after updating my email password, I am still unable to receive email. And frustratingly unable to delete an email address not created by me as it is not visible.

Has anyone ever experienced something like this?

How do you know that you have two email addresses if one of them is not visible?

How do you access your email, is it with a web browser (webmail)  or  do you use an email client/app?

Have you checked to see if there is any "forwarding" set up in the email account?

Have you checked to see if there are any "rules" set up in the email account?

Have you run a virus check and a malware check?

Hi

And thank you for your reply. I use my sole email address on two Apple devices. No forwarding, no rules, just plain old fashion sending and receiving.

I know there are 2 address as when I went into My BT to update password it is showing 2 email addresses, one of which is the one I use, and the other is not visible. If it was, I would delete it.

It's odd that I have been receiving porn emails from a spammer, would have thought they would go to the junk file, but they have been getting into my in box. Then this happens. An acquaintance alerted me when he contacted via text to say an email that he had sent to me actually bounced to say that the address did not exist?

I'm sure there will be an explanation soon enough,

When you create a xxxx@btinternet.com then a corresponding xxxx@btopenworld.com is automatically created so it can look as if you have 2 email addresses. You can use either and you will receive the emails using either address in the same inbox. I’m not sure if this still happens?

I was asking if you have checked if forwarding or rules have been set up on your email account. Not by you but by a possible hacker. You need to log onto your email account using a web browser in order to check. 

You are still not clear about the 2nd email address. You say it was when you went to your MyBT that it is showing two email addresses but one is invisible! Where did you see the 2nd invisible email address?

Is it possible that your friend who sent the email to you made an error with your email address. 

Have you tried sending an email to your self to see what happens?

Have checked my email account rules etc, all OK.

If I could post a screenshot of My BT, I would. It shows that I have 2 out of 11 email addresses. I have only ever had one which is showing, and the other is not. It is only showing my current and only btinternet.com address.

My partner has tried sending me emails, and they are not coming into my in box. My last inbound email was from PayPal at 15.40 today.

Interestingly, though, all emails from BT domains are arriving into my inbox but nothing outside of that.

Hope that is a better explanation.

You should check your "Blocked Senders" list in BTMail to ensure you have not blocked the email addresses or the domains, the part after @, of the people whose email you are not receiving.

Log onto your BTMail account using a browser, not an email client/app, and then click on your username at the right hand side. Select "Settings" then go to the left hand side and select "Mail". Scroll down and click on "Blocked Senders". Scroll down the list until you find the one you want to unblock and select it. Click on "delete".

As stated above, I am using a MacBook/Firefox browser. Nothing whatsoever is blocked.

Update...

Since changing my password, I am able to receive some email and others are not getting through. My partner uses an Apple email address (me.com) and they are not coming through neither is his Gmail correspondence, he has his own domain and strangely enough, email can be delivered from there. Also, the dodgy email traffic continues.

Not sure what is going on. I have not blocked any email addresses at all.

I think it might be best to give someone at BT a call to check this out. Does anyone know if there is a dedicated number?
