Emails disappearing before being read and it says 2 unread when there are none

My wife's email that is linked to my account is no longer receiving emails and shows 2 or 3 unread mail when logged in via the Web page but all messages on the list are open and on her iPhone it sometimes  shows the same unread number and a few appear but when trying trying to click on them they disappear.  

I have seen others on this site have had the same issue.
