Oddly enough it is the button in the middle between the left and right buttons. Usually doubles as the scroll wheel.

Quick suggestion in case it's helpful to anyone who is being driven mad by the issue.

Instead of clicking a link in the email preview pane, open the email (quick double-click), which opens the message in a pop-put window. Click the link from there, then, when finished, close the pop-up window, and you are back to where you were in the inbox.

Still not ideal, but very slightly less time-consuming and cumbersome.

Thank you that is very helpful. Like many others it is just getting used to using these work arounds when BT email users have had links automatically open in a new tab for years.

I agree completely. I'm still only remembering to do the work-around about one in about times.
