Same for me using Avast AV.

Works fine using email clients and email apps.

Maybe BT are working on a fix as we speak LOL 🤣 It's actually good to know I'm not alone, obviously something they've just done (worked fine 30 minutes before I posted this message), as usual, doesn't seem to have been tested properly in the real world, where people actually use their WebMail...

It works fine with Microsoft Defender.

It is probably a false positive on the AV side of things rather than a Phishing problem and will probably have been triggered by some tinkering at BT.

I will notify the moderators to see if they can get an update.

Meanwhile you could always mark your AV to allow the connection if you feel it is safe.

I've actually just discovered a workaround (I think!). In my anti virus, AVG  'settings', there is a way to enter, 'exceptions'. So I entered email.bt.com and so far it hasn't kicked me off despite a few refresh screens. Would be nice if BT could properly fix it though..

I don’t know if the two things are related but just this week, I’ve started getting reports of a phishing trojan in backup shadow copies.  The location is in Firefox profiles.  My own investigation and the chat on the internet suggest it is a false positive.  Chat on the internet has people reporting the same in Chrome and Thunderbird, suggesting it affects email clients too.  Interestingly, the chat goes back to October but I’ve only just encountered it.  It looks like a Windows bug to me.

AVG isn't a BT product and not something they can fix, false positives happen with security software all the time, AVG will eventually remove it, most likely when the realise or when BT make them aware.

Hopefully this thread will be a mechanism for BT to contact AVG about the issue and and launch an eventual resolution...
