Same for me. This started 3 days ago. I stopped using their broadband package because the service was so bad months ago and now I have this message on the app but not when accessing through the web browser. I wonder if it is a signal problem.

If you are no longer a BT Broadband customer your email account will have been downgraded to a BTMail Basic account which can only be used with a web browser and not with an email client or email app.

Thanks for that. I will stop using the app and probably move to GMail. It is strange because I can use the app when I drive 250 meters down the road to the village.
