Switching accounts under the new email system

This is what I have to do to switch BT webmail accounts.

1. Click on switch account, click yes.

2. It takes me to the BT home page.

3. If I click on email it will take me back to the original account

4. So I sign in to My BT

5. Then I click on email and a blank sign in page comes up

6. Then I log in to the second email account

7. Hey presto I've switched accounts

Can you imagine how this  would affect a small business with various accounts?

A small business wouldn't (or shouldn't) be using a flaky residential email system. Nor would they be using webmail. They would use a mail client with as many different accounts from as many different providers that they wish all in one place with no problem moving from one account to another. They can even drag and drop emails from one account to another if necessary.

The "old" way of doing it, when you could switch accounts when logged in to your "main" account without having to log into the other accounts was changed a while back and certainly well before the "New" email system was introduced.

I do not recall nor really expect BT to give a reason as to why they did that but I suspect it would probably have been a security reason such as if the "main" account was hacked, the hacker would have access to all the email accounts that were associated to that account, where as now a hacker would need to know the username and password of each of the individual accounts.

This would obviously enhance the security of the individual accounts.

I'm not sure whether I'm still on the old email, I think it's the new one since my emails are grouped by date; they didn't use to be.

Anyway, I've just tried creating a new BT email address and then ADDed it to my main email account. I can access both my main BT account and the new one without having to log out.

 

Steps:

  • Click  your email address at top-right and  select 'Settings' from drop-down list
  • Select 'Mail' from the Setting menu on the left
  • Click 'Add '  on the right-hand side
  • Enter the email address and password and then click 'Save' at the bottom.

 

I don't know if this capability will be withdrawn in future, as of today it still works for me.

What you have done is added the email account to your email account so that it is accessed in the same way as an email client/app would access it, as outlined by @licquorice . ie you have set the email username and password to be available to your "main" email account. 

It is giving you access but in a different way from what the previous way did it and it is now down to your decision to do it that way and not BT's so if the security is over come it is your liability and not BT's

EDIT: It sounds like you are on the new email system and the method you have posted was/is available on both the "old" and "new" system and I doubt it will be removed.
