I have used BT Email successfully for many years, collecting emails via Thunderbird, iPhone mail app and, occasionally webmail. I recently spent 4 days in Istanbul and access from my iphone for email was problematic from the start. Occasionally a few mails would download (but nothing like the normal volumes), often the system would respond that the password was incorrect. All in all, the system was very unreliable and useless. On returning to the UK, Thunderbird and webmail worked fine but my iphone would not download any emails. I have tried deleting the iphone account and re-installing but attempts by the iphone verify routine result in failure, typically "password or username incorrect" or "SMTP server doesn't accept password authentication". It almost looks as though my settings on the BT server which deals with the iphone interface have become corrupted while the webmail and Thuderbird interfaces remain intact. Is that possible? Any suggestions? I am anxious not to change my password as, in my experience, that often causes more problems than it solves.

The problem lies with Apple. It is trying to set the SMTP credentials with password encryption which is not required as the whole connection is already encrypted. Password needs to be plain rather than encrypted.
Unless I'm mistaken, the only setting in Mail on iPhone and iPad is for SMTP authentication, not encryption. This should be set to 'password', which I believe means the same as 'plain' in other clients.
