E mail repopulating

Go to solution

My wife’s e mail has recently started repopulating with thousands of e mails going back to when she set up the account. She has just updated her I phone. Apple says it’s BT . BT says it’s apple.

She has tried deleting the old e mails but they keep repopulating

Has she checked to see if the emails are still showing on the BT servers when she logs onto her email account using a web browser? If they are not there it means that they have been deleted from the BT servers and as such it can not be a BT issue.

Was she backing up her emails etc to her Apple account when she was using her old iPhone?

If she was it is possible that when she set the transfer of her "old" phone to her "new" phone the emails that were backed up are now being downloaded onto her phone. It may be that she will need to let the whole back up be downloaded before she will be able to delete them or she could try deleting the backup from her Apple account.

She may be able to get advise regarding this on the Apple forum.

The e-mails are on the BT server as well. It looks like we are finally at the end of the restore and are manually deleting them. This may take a few days. A case of unforeseen consequences.

Thank you for the advice.

If the email app is set up as an IMAP account it will download them onto the iPhone because it will synchronise with the BT servers. If you do not delete them from the BT servers this will happen every time she sets up the email app. If it is an IMAP account you can delete them from either the email app or by logging onto the email account using a web browser.

If it is set up as a POP3 the emails will be downloaded onto the iPhone but will not be deleted from the BT servers unless at the time of setting the email app up you ticked the box in the email app setting to "delete the email server after downloading".

If you are deleting them by logging on to the email account using a web browser this will only delete them from the server and not the email app.

If you are deleting them in the email app it only delete them on the email app they will still be on the servers and this will happen again the next time she sets up the email account.
